Chanchal, daughter of one Premlal, was admitted to LNJP Hospital last week where doctors said she died of internal bleeding. "Her platelet count was very low and she was bleeding in the abdomen. Despite our best efforts, she could not be saved," said a senior doctor.
Civic officials said the patient's address mentioned in the hospital logbook was 'LNJP Colony' but no one was present there when a team visited the spot. Dengue had claimed its first victim on September 29 when nine-year-old Tabassum Khan, a resident of Sangam Vihar in south Delhi, died at AIIMS.
On Friday, municipal officials said 34 fresh cases of dengue had been identified, taking the total count to 585, of which five were residents of neighbouring states. The figure has seen a rise in this period this year as against 471 cases last year. However, the number of casualties is half of last year's four. "Maximum number of dengue cases have been reported from South Corporation (219) followed by North Corporation (207) and East Corporation (132)," said the official. He added that in East Delhi which is divided into two zones - Shahdara (South) and Shadara (North) - more than 100 cases have been reported in the past three weeks.
Dr Richa Dewan, medical superintendent of LNJP Hospital, said more than a hundred patients have been confirmed positive for dengue at their hospital in the past three months. "We are getting 10-15 fresh cases daily," she said.
According to Dr C M Khanijo, medical superintendent of B R Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini, they have had to convert the disaster ward into a special facility to handle the large number of patients coming with dengue. "Some patients we are getting have both typhoid and dengue," he said.
The private labs say they are flooded with patients coming for dengue tests. "We are getting 10-15 positive cases daily. A number of patients are also found positive for typhoid, hepatitis and malaria," said Dr Navin Dang, clinical microbiologist and director of Dr Dang Labs Pvt Ltd.
He said that in comparison to previous years, this year the dengue cases occurred late and there has been a rise in the past few weeks.
"Most dengue patients can be managed at home. Only those requiring platelet transfusion or others suffering from secondary health complications, like heart disease or kidney failure, need to be admitted," said Dr Anoop Misra, director and head of department of diabetes and metabolic diseases at Fortis Hospitals.
