NEW DELHI: The benefit of EWS has now been extended to orphans. The Delhi government's Directorate of Education has, in a notification dated October 17, announced its decision to include orphans in the category of "children belonging to disadvantaged group".

Applications for this category must be supported by certificates issued by the women and child development department.

There are two broad categories within EWS — economically disadvantaged and socially disadvantaged — explains Amit Singla, director (education). The latter includes candidates from SC/ST, OBC and persons with disabilities categories. To this, a fourth category - "orphan", as defined in the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Rules, 2007 — has been added.

"There was a case in the high court and the court had asked the government to take a decision. We have decided to include the category within EWS and have notified everyone," says Singla. The Social Jurists had filed a PIL on the subject.
