NEW DELHI: The smog that had hovered over the national capital for several days cleared on Friday morning, when the minimum temperature was recorded at 12.8 degrees Celsius, a notch below average for this time of the season.

The Met office has forecast a clear day followed by a misty evening.

"The smog cover which had enveloped the city for the past few days has cleared. But smog might return after Diwali, as the air pollution levels might increase," said an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official.

"Skies will be clear during the day. The mist will return in the evening," he added.

The maximum temperature was expected to hover around 27 degrees Celsius, the IMD official said.

Humidity at 8.30 a.m. was 79 percent.

Thursday's maximum temperature was a notch below average for this time of the year at 29.3 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature was average at 14.3 degrees Celsius.

Following concerns expressed by the Supreme Court over smog-ridden Delhi, the Delhi government Wednesday blamed pollution emanating from vehicles in neighbouring states for the smog in the city.

The clouds of pollutants emerging from seasonal crop residue burning from neighbouring Punjab and Haryana regions was another reason for the smog.
