NEW DELHI: An arterial road in east Delhi, the GT Road (which is a continuation of National Highway-1) has recorded double the number of pedestrian deaths this year up till August-end as compared to the same period last year. This year, already 21 pedestrians have lost their lives in this stretch, while last year this figure stood at 10. A total of 24 pedestrians had died on this road last year, and TOI had highlighted the vulnerability of pedestrians on this road in January this year. Unfortunately, matters seem to have grown only worse over the course of the past eight months.
When a TOI team visited the area, the reason why deaths have shot up was apparent. With almost no pavements, proper crossover facilities at grade level or foot over-bridges (FOBs) in this stretch, it is any pedestrian's worst nightmare. Despite a metro line running parallel to the road, which increases the density of pedestrians in the stretch, facilities for them are almost nil. Traffic police claimed that they have introduced rumble strips and requested cautionary boards along the route but this appears woefully little to address the problem.
"We have introduced speed calming measures and increased traffic police presence so that violations don't take place. We will ask for zebra crossings in some places so that pedestrians are reaffirmed their right to cross over. Most of these accidents have happened during the night when police presence is low," said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg.
There are a several more interventions required at GT Road, including pedestrians signals, proper footpaths and close check on violations by heavy vehicles that pose risks for other road users. Vehicles travel in high speed along this stretch as it is a high speed corridor. The road has been built mostly for vehicle owners with development of flyovers and few red lights. Shockingly, when TOI visited the spot it was found that there is a bus stop - with no markings or place for pedestrians to cross over - right in the middle of the flyover. Pedestrians frequently climb on top of the flyover and cross it in order to catch buses.
Several rumble strips placed along the road are broken, offering little speed reduction. Despite a large number of people crossing over to the nearby Shyamgiri mandir, a French wholesale grocery shop and Delhi University's Shyamlal College along the stretch, facilities for pedestrians are almost non-existent.
Earlier, officials had assures that a "three-pronged strategy" would be worked out for GT Road where sufficient crossovers in the form of underpasses and FOBs will be built as this is an elevated road. Traffic police had promised to work out traffic signals as required as well as introduce strict speed-checking enforcement along the stretch.
