Centre sets up task force to look into women’s safety issues in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Amid severe criticism of the police and city government for not doing enough to make the national capital safe for women, the Centre on Tuesday constituted a special task force, headed by Union home secretary, to look into safety issues of women in Delhi and review the functioning of the city police on a regular basis.

The task force, comprising city police commissioner, Delhi chief secretary and chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women as members, will also take into consideration the suggestions made by the MPs during the debate on the issue.

"The task force will continuously review action taken by the Delhi Police and the Delhi government," said a home ministry official.

Special commissioners of police (traffic and law & order), NDMC chairperson, city transport commissioner, joint secretary (UT) in the home ministry, commissioners of East, North and South Delhi Municipal Corporations and excise commissioner of the city government will be the other members of the task force.

"The task force may co-opt any such member that it may deem fit in future," said the official.

Constitution of task force is the second such step which may look into the various aspects of women safety in Delhi. Earlier on December 28, the government had instituted a Commission of Inquiry under justice (retired) Usha Mehra.

This panel, besides requesting the members of public to provide any information about the shocking incident of gang-rape and brutal assault on a 23-year-old girl here on December 16, also sought suggestions on measures to improve the safety and security of women in the entire National Capital Region (NCR), including Delhi.

On the issue of making stringent law, the government has already set up Verma Committee which will give its recommendations on amending laws by January 22.

The committee - headed by former chief justice of India J S Verma - was constituted on December 23 to look into the possible amendments to the criminal law so as to provide for quicker trial and enhanced punishment for criminals, accused of committing "sexual assault of extreme nature against women".

The Verma Committee — comprising members, justice (retired) Leila Seth and former solicitor general Gopal Subramaniam - had last month sought comments from the public in general, particularly eminent jurists, legal professionals, NGOs, women's groups and civil society members on reviewing the existing laws.

"The suggestions can be sent at email to — justice.verma@nic.in or through FAX at 011-23092675," said a home ministry's statement.
