Delhi gang rape: Chargesheet filed against five accused

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Police filed chargesheet against five of the six accused in the brutal gang-rape of Nirbhaya in the metropolitan magistrate's court in Saket on Thursday. The 23-year old physiotherapy student was gang-raped in a moving bus, assaulted and thrown out of the running bus along with her friend on December 16, 2012.

She later died on December 29, 2012 in a multi-speciality Singapore hospital where she was flown in for treatment after battling for her life for 13 days.

The five accused — Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh and their accomplices Pawan Gupta, Vinay Sharma and Akshay Thakur — have been charged for the offences of murder, gang rape, attempt to murder, kidnapping, unnatural offences, dacoity, hurting in committing robbery, destruction of evidence, criminal conspiracy and common intention under the Indian Penal Code.

The sixth accused, who is thought to be a juvenile, will be charged separately. His bone density are being analyzed now to ascertain if the sixth accused is a juvenile or an adult.

According to reports, the chargesheet says that DNA reports have confirmed that all the six accused were involved in the horrific crime in which the 23-year-old girl lost her life.

The police filed the chargesheet along with other documents, many sealed, in the court of metropolitan magistrate Surya Malik Grover. Police also sought direction for not disclosing the content of the FIR and other documents in sealed covers to protect the victim's identity. It also place before the court the chargesheet in electronic form.

Earlier, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Altamas Kabir inaugurated a fast-track court at Saket court complex in Delhi last evening. The gang rape and murder of a 23-year old physiotherapy student in Delhi will be the first case to be heard in this court.

Strongly advocating for courts to act as a deterrent in the future to check crimes against women, CJI Kabir on Wednesday said 'a serious message needs to be sent in dealing with such heinous crimes'.
