New Delhi: It is their silence that attracts you. The somber look on their faces is a hint of the realization of the brutality that occurred on a Sunday night. They feel helpless with their inability to do something so they come in the dead of the night. They are equipped with no banners or placards but a candle in their hand and a silent prayer on their lips. With most Delhiites making themselves comfortable in their beds getting ready to sleep after a long day of protests, these men and women use that hour of solitude to express their silent solidarity.

Driving down from various corners of Delhi, professionals like bankers, teachers and HR personnel, come to Safdarjung Hospital in the middle of the night and light a candle as a sign of their support. They say the flame is a symbol of the courage ablaze in the victim, who has been fighting the odds since Sunday.

"Her courage is inspiring. She is fighter and we want to tell her we are with her," said a human resource professional who did not want to be identified. "Ever since my husband and I have heard of her we have been in shock. We know we can't do much but all we have is a heart-felt pray," she said.

It is not just the HR professional but quite a few Delhiites have turned up in the middle of the night to show their support. Some of them stand in silence in front of all the messages left behind for the victim at the hospital entrance; some sit light more candle replacing the extinguishing ones and some also inquire from the guards about the victim's well being.

One of them was a banker who works for a state-run bank. After hearing about the victim's deteriorating health on Wednesday, he and his wife drove all the way from Mayur Vihar at 11:30PM to enquire about the victim's well-being.

"The incident has moved me a lot. I have a wife and mother at home and I cannot even ensure their safety even if I am around," he said.

Bhawana Guliya from Kalkaji came with her entire family including their dog Matli. The entire family lit candles for the victim. Expressing her anger Guliya said, "They do not deserve capital punishment. They should be made to suffer, that is what will act as a deterrent," she said.

While Guilya was angry at the injustice Sunitesh Kumar who rode on a bike from IP extension to the hospital at midnight, did not want to speak much.

"I just want to tell her my good wishes and prayers turn to you," said Kumar, who is a teacher by profession.
