Dance item at convention raises hackles

FARIDABAD: The three-day tattoo convention at Hotel Rajhans here, under Haryana Tourism, started on a controversial note on Friday. The musical evening planned on the inaugural day had to be stopped midway after a European dancer allegedly went topless while performing on stage.

The hotel management and office bearers of INELO filed a written complaint at Surajkund police station. While the organizers maintained that all participants had been debarred from performing any such acts, the divisional manager of the hotel said they had given permission for only the tattoo convention and had not been informed about any dance programme. The dancer submitted a written apology to Haryana Tourism, while the organizers held her solely responsible for the act.

The divisional manager of the hotel, Rajiv Sabharwal, was suspended after orders were issued by Anand Mohan Sharan, managing director of Haryana Tourism.

Railway job racket busted

NEW DELHI: An employment racket that cheated nearly 400 men of more than Rs 1 lakh each has been busted with the arrest of three conspirators. However, one suspect remains at large. Police said the gang targeted railway job aspirants in Bihar, West Bengal and Haryana, and duped them with a fake website resembling the official site of Railway Recruitment Board Muzaffarpur, Bihar.

South district police said the accused — Sagar Saxena (32), Pravin Kumar (24) and Virender Sharma (29) — are well qualified academically. One of them is an MBA, another a DU graduate and the third a software engineer.

"During interrogation, they revealed that they connived with a man named Manish, from West Bengal, to create a fake website whose link resembled that of the official website of the railway recruitment board. They would declare results on their site using roll numbers lifted from the original website. Thereafter, they would contact the candidates as railways officials and collect money from them to assure a job," said additional DCP, PS Kushwaha.

Sagar Saxena allegedly designed and hosted the fake website while Pravin Kumar arranged for the domain name and hosting space. Virender used to pick up names and roll numbers of aspirants on the directions of Manish, who is on the run, and declare them selected.

"Manish collected money from these duped candidates and the four conspirators split the booty. They charged Rs 1-1.5 lakh each for railway jobs in groups C and D," said Kushwaha.

Sagar has studied up to BCom from Allahabad University and trained in software engineering. He was working with a private company in Nehru Place. Pravin did his BCom from DU through correspondence and is a graphic designer. Virender had done his MBA from City College, Gwalior.

Court rejects NRI’s plea against bank

NEW DELHI: A court has dismissed a US-based NRI's plea for recovery from a bank over Rs 1 lakh, which was allegedly withdrawn from his account by some unauthorized person due to the bank's negligence.

Civil judge Ruchi Aggarwal rejected the plea of Georgia resident Viresh Nayar on the ground that he was unable to prove that he had not authorized any other person to use his ATM card.

While dismissing Nayar's plea, the court also refused to rely on the statement of a man, representing Nayar as his attorney in the case, on the gound that he could not have apprised the court of the facts which were in the personal knowledge of Nayar alone.

"It is clear that he (Nayar's acquaintance) does not have any personal knowledge about the incident. He is only deposing what the plaintiff told him which is not permitted by law."

Nayar had filed the plea against Standard Chartered Bank for recovery of Rs 1.01 lakh, saying that he was holding an account in a south Delhi branch while working in Delhi. Nayar said he kept the ATM card for the account which was valid from August 1998 to August 2000 even after moving to the US. Nayar alleged that when in December 2001, he went to close the account, he was told that the mpney had been withdrawn.

Firing outside MLA’s office

NEW DELHI: Four men on motorcycles opened fire outside the office of Trilokpuri MLA Sunil Vaidya on late Saturday night. Nobody was injured in the incident as the office was shut at that time.

Police were informed around 1.30am. They reached the spot and recovered empty cartridges. Two of the bullets had pierced the shutter, cops said.

Eyewitnesses claimed that the assailants came on two bikes and flashed guns before opening fire outside the MLA's office.

Vaidya told police officers that he was attacked earlier as well.

NEW DELHI: One person was killed and another injured in a shootout at the Kamla Market area of central Delhi Monday, police said.

"There has been a shootout. One man has been killed and another is injured," a police official said.

The attack took place in an area behind Zakir Hussain college.

The injured man has been admitted to LNJP hospital.

"The police were informed about the shootout around 11.45 a.m. The motive behind the attack or the identity of the attacker are not yet known," the official said.

Cars parked near school choke BRT

NEW DELHI: Traffic was completely thrown out of gear on the BRT corridor on Saturday afternoon because of a parent-teacher meeting held at a Pushp Vihar school. Private vehicles brought by parents were parked on the main carriageway and the non-motorized vehicle (NMV) lane of the corridor in large numbers. A non-functional traffic signal at the Sheikh Sarai intersection compounded the chaos.

"A large number of vehicles came to the school around noon and the PTA meeting lasted for almost two hours. Despite traffic arrangements being in place, the situation could be normalized only after 3pm when most vehicles left," said joint commissioner of police (traffic) Satyendra Garg.

Officials said that hundreds of parents reached the school and parked their vehicles on the NMV lane. Later, some cars were even moved to the main carriageway. "There is anyway hardly any space for private vehicles on the BRT corridor. The situation became chaotic for both parents who had queued up to enter the school and commuters travelling on the corridor. Cops had been stationed at the spot but the number of cars made it unmanageable to control traffic," said a source.

Traffic police had deployed six officers on the stretch but it didn't help. "There were hundreds of cars. We can't start towing away all vehicles. There is not enough parking inside the school either. We usually try to minimize chaos during school programmes by putting up barricades but there is little scope to do that on the BRT corridor as there is simply no road space," said a traffic official of the area.

DIMTS officials, who look after the BRT stretch, said that a signal fault at the Sheikh Sarai intersection also added to the mess. "Since the fault coincided with the time of the PTA meeting, the two factors led to a jam. The glitch was fixed only when the meeting ended," said a DIMTS official.

Kejriwal, others to burn power bills in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kejriwal and other members of India Against Corruption (IAC) have threatened to burn electricity bills on Sunday to protest hikes in power tariff in the national capital.

"People in 62 assemblies and 114 wards in Delhi are burning their electricity bills to protest against the steep hike in electricity tariff. Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, Gopal Rai and Kumar Vishwas would join people in some areas," IAC said in a statement.

Kejriwal appealed to Delhiites to burn their power bills and show their protest.

He said Delhi would show the way in this "civil disobedience movement".

The IAC said the activists would burn bills in Bawana, Mukherjee Nagar, Mahipalpur and Lakshmi Nagar.

Kejriwal appealed to people to stop paying power and water bills till the Delhi government withdrew tariff hikes.

IAC launched a "Bijli-Paani Satyagraha" campaign Saturday to protest the current power and water bills.

Kejriwal, with other IAC members, went to a labourer's house in Tigri colony and restored his power connection.

The labourer received a bill of around Rs.15,000 last month and his connection was snapped for non-payment.

"The Delhi government must roll back the hike before Nov 3 or we will protest again Nov 4 and 'gherao' (chief minister) Sheila Dikshit's house. We challenge them to try to cut the electricity of anyone in Delhi," Kejriwal said Saturday.

Defence Colony heist: Three more arrested

NEW DELHI: Three more persons allegedly involved in the sensational Rs 5.25 crore heist in south Delhi last month have been arrested, taking the total number of arrests to ten in the case.

The arrested have been identified as Vijay Nahar, Ranjit and Pawan. Nahar was arrested from Palwal while Ranjit and Pawan were apprehended from Usmapur.

Around Rs 40 lakh was allegedly recovered from them. Earlier, police had allegedly recovered Rs 85 lakh from Nahar's relatives.

Vijay, also a police informer, allegedly entered the world of crime in 1996 by stealing car stereos and later cars.

Police have so far arrested ten persons, including three who carried out the heist in Defence Colony on September 28. Two more persons directly involved in the robbery are still on the run.

Two youths, who were allegedly involved in the planning were also arrested besides two relatives of a suspected robber who helped them in hiding a portion of the money.

The gang had waylaid the cash van, pinned down a security guard and shot him after he tried to snatch their weapons. They fled the spot in the cash van leaving behind the car in which they were following the vehicle. The guard later succumbed to bullet wound.

It was a raid at the main accuse Har krishen's house in Khirki that helped police in its trail. The key of the looted cash van was recovered in his house. Harikrishen and his wife Rashmi were apprehended from Banda in UP on October three.

The first to be arrested was Deepak Sharma, brother of Harikrishen, on September 29, a day after the heist.

Police on September 29 managed to identify the house which was believed to have been used by the suspects. It belonged to Hari Krishan who had shifted recently and purchased it in his wife's name.

Raids were conducted at this house and from there, police managed to recover the keys of the cash van, which was abandoned by the gang. Some other documents were also seized from the spot which indicated that the suspects had visited and stayed there.

One more held for Rs 5.25 crore heist

NEW DELHI: One person was arrested Saturday in connection with the sensational Rs 5.25 crore bank van robbery here that left a guard dead, police said Sunday. In all, three people were arrested over the weekend, raising the number of arrests in the case to 10.

Vijay Pandit alias Shyam, 37, was arrested Saturday evening at Palwal bus stand in Haryana. He is a resident of south Delhi's Maidangarhi.

Earlier, Pawan Kumar alias Pappu, 30, and Ranjit, 30, both residents of east Delhi's Usmanpur, were arrested Friday from their homes.

Ranjit is a general store merchant while Pawan works with BSES. Rs 25 lakh was recovered from them, taking the total recovered amount to Rs 2.64 crore.

Vijay told police that he got Rs 90 lakh as his share. "Around Rs 86 lakh cash has been recovered from his relatives Tek Chand and Krishan Kumar, who are in police custody. Vijay spent some of the money and paid an associate in Gurgaon for the pistol used in the crime," said a police officer.

Vijay has been involved in at least 27 cases of murder, kidnapping, robberies and theft. He was released from jail two years ago. He played an instrumental role in the robbery, from hatching the conspiracy to the distribution of the looted cash.

Earlier, he was in jail along with Hari Kishan and Deepak, the main accused, who are in custody now.

"After getting out of jail, he went underground and got married last year. He wanted to do something big, for which he planned and executed this robbery," said the officer.

They took a fortnight to hatch the plan, collect logistics, and arrange a vehicle, weapons and houses.

On the day of the robbery, the accused started from IGNOU road.

Vijay and Ranjeet drank liquor before the robbery. After the heist, he collected his share from Hari Kishan's house in Khirki and went home.

"He then fled with his wife and ailing daughter to Gurgaon. He gave two major portions of his share to two relatives and then fled towards Mewat," said the officer.

A hunt is on to arrest the remaining accused.

The heist took place around 1.19pm near a petrol pump in D-15, Defence Colony on Sep 28. The accused fled with the Maruti Eeco (Radio Taxi No. DL 1 RT 2088) carrying a cash amount of Rs.5.25 crore.

Security personnel in the cash van, attached to a security company Premier Shield, had collected the amount from ICICI Bank's Hauz Khas branch and were heading towards Lajpat Nagar. Anil Kumar was driving and with him were guards Munne Singh and Ajab Singh, and custodian Ashok Kumar.

The accused shot Munne Singh, who was later pronounced dead at AIIMS, before fleeing with the cash van.

33 fresh cases of dengue in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Dengue appears to be spreading fast in the capital with 33 fresh cases being reported today, the highest so far for a day this season.

With this, the total number of cases have risen to 202 from yesterday's 169. A nine-year-old girl died due to dengue late last month.

Most of the 12 zones in the jurisdiction of South, North and East Delhi Municipalities recorded dengue cases, a statement issued by the civic bodies said. However, no deaths were reported today.

Out of the 202 cases, three originated from outside the capital.

Last year, the capital saw 216 cases of dengue, including eight originating from outside, and three deaths. In 2010, there were 4,108 cases, including 24 from outside, and five deaths while the figures for 2009 were 29 dengue cases and no deaths.

In 2008, there were 550 dengue cases and two deaths.
