Spurned, boy hits 20-year-old classmate

NEW DELHI: A 20-year-old woman was attacked by her classmate outside Karkardooma Metro station on Saturday after she repeatedly rejected his proposal for marriage.

The incident was reported around 8pm while the woman was returning from a private college in Gurgaon. The man, who is also 20 years old, was travelling on the same train. When the woman was walking to the parking lot at to get her two-wheeler, the man confronted her and the two soon got into an argument, following which the woman asked the accused to leave.

Furious at being rejected, he began slapping and punching the woman. Other passengers waiting outside the station stopped the man but he managed to flee the spot.

The victim told police that she had seen the accused at the Metro station but had been avoiding him. She said the boy, who was her classmate, had been stalking her.

A case has been registered at the Yamuna Depot and efforts are being made to trace the accused.

Delhi University website crashes on the first day of admissions; North campus witnesses rush for OMR forms

NEW DELHI: Although Delhi University started its online registration process for the undergraduate admissions at midnight on Monday, the website crashed. This is not the first time but third consecutive year when aspirants faced problems in online registration process.

""I was thinking of registering from the comfort of home to beat the heat outside. But then forced to come to Gargi college as the website is not functioning,"" said Aakriti Sinha, a commerce aspirants.

Although it was a slow start at the 18 designated colleges in the morning, sale of forms picked up later in the day. North campus centers witnessed rush. Rush lead to chaos in Daulat Ram college. But it was better managed at SGTB Khalsa college which arranged tents and refreshment anticipating the heat. Sale of centralized admission forms to continue till June 16, 2014.

Rajnath seeks roadmap for strengthening internal security

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh today met heads of various paramilitary forces and chiefs of central security agencies and asked them to prepare a road map for strengthening the country's internal security.
During the meeting, which lasted for 30 minutes, the minister made it clear that while developing the road map, the security agencies should keep in mind the development aspect as well.
Besides head of paramilitary forces, the meeting was attended by national security adviser Ajit Doval, Intelligence Bureau chief Asif Ibrahim and chief of Research and analysis wing Alok Joshi.
While taking over as the home minister, Rajnath had asked his officials to come up with out of the box ideas for internal security and better coordination between the Centre and states.
He had said that the blueprint should also contain ideas to resolve border disputes with neighbouring countries without compromising national interests.
Crucial divisions dealing with internal security, Naxal management, Centre-State, North-East and Jammu and Kashmir have also been directed to prepare a road map to improve internal security architecture in the next few days.
Singh has already been briefed about the problems along the international border, like infiltration from Bangladesh and dispute with Pakistan on Sir Creek, and ways to resolve them.

Government cuts import tariff value on gold, silver

NEW DELHI: Government today slashed import tariff value on gold and silver to USD 408 per 10 grams and USD 617 per kg respectively, in view of weakness in bullion prices globally.
In the second fortnight of May, tariff value on imported gold stood at USD 424 per 10 grams and silver at USD 650 per kg.
The import tariff value - base price at which customs duty is determined to prevent under-invoicing - is revised on a fortnightly basis taking into account the volatility in global prices.
The reduction in tariff value on imported gold and silver has been notified by the Central Board of Excise and Customs, an official statement said.
In the last few sessions, global gold prices have been ruling on a lower side as positive US economic data backed the case for the Federal Reserve to keep on reducing monetary stimulus which has dimmed the metal's appeal.
In Singapore, both gold and silver were trading down at USD 1,246.9 per ounce and USD 18.70 per ounce respectively, today. Taking global cues, domestic gold rates in the national capital touched 11 month low at Rs 27,400 per 10 grams.
Due to government curbs, the country's total gold and silver imports dropped 40 per cent to USD 33.46 billion in 2013-14, as against USD 55.79 billion in the previous year.
Gold is the second largest import item for India after petroleum. The government had taken several measures to curb gold shipments to address the high current account deficit.
These measures include raising the import duty to 10 per cent on the metal and also made it mandatory for traders to export 20 per cent of the imported gold.

2 dead, 11 injured in building collapse in north Delhi

NEW DELHI: Two persons were killed while 11 others, including a woman, were injured when a three storey under-construction building collapsed on Sunday afternoon in Sadar Bazar area in north Delhi.

"Two people were killed and 11 were injured when an under-construction multi-storey building collapsed in Sadar Bazar's Gali Barna area," deputy commissioner of police (North) Sindhu Pillai said.

While one body was pulled out of the rubble, another man died while being rushed to a hospital, he said.

"Operations to remove the debris are on. Some more people may be trapped in the debris," a police officer said, adding that the deceased were in their late 20's and were believed to working at the construction site.

According to the Delhi Fire Service officials, a call was received by them at around 12:55pm after which five fire tenders were rushed to the spot.

They said three JCB excavating machines have been sent to the spot to remove the debris and rescue operations were going on.

The police said the identities of the deceased were yet to be established. "The injured persons were mostly labourers who were working there," it said.

The injured have been admitted to the Sushruta Trauma Centre at Hindu Rao Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital.

"One of the injured is stated to be critical," the police officer said.

He said the construction work was going on there on the second and third floors.

Need contempt power to secure respect, says SC

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court has justified the much debated contempt of court powers saying it was necessary to "secure public respect and confidence in judicial process" and laid down what should be the tone, tenor and timing of a contemnor's apology. It upheld an Allahabad HC order rejecting an advocate's apology and sending him to a month in jail for committing contempt of court by leveling allegations against judges. However, it reduced the fine amount from Rs 20,000 to Rs 2,000, the maximum a court can impose on a contemnor.

A bench of Justices B S Chauhan and A K Sikri said, "Power of courts to punish for contempt is to secure public respect and confidence in judicial process. Thus, it is a necessary incident to every court of justice." It cautioned, "It is a rare species of judicial power which by the very nature calls for exercise with care and caution. It ought to be exercised where 'silence is no longer an option'."

2 feared dead in building collapse in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Two people are feared dead and at least seven people have been injured after a building under construction collapsed in Sadar Bazaar area here on Sunday, according to Times Now.

Fire tenders were rushed to the spot after the building came crashing down.

Dust storm likely in Delhi tonight

NEW DELHI: Another dust storm is likely to hit Delhi later on Sunday, the weather department has said, two days after a massive storm left nine people dead in the city and surrounding areas.

Thundershowers coupled with high-speed dusty winds had crippled normal lives in the city on Friday evening, with incidents of falling trees, collapse of walls and electrocution, claiming nine lives in Delhi and NCR.

According to the Met department, another dust storm is likely to hit the national capital later in the night.

On Sunday, the maximum temperature was recorded at 37.8 degrees celsius, three notches below normal, while the minimum was recorded at 25.6 degree celsius, two notches below normal.

Humidity oscillated between 38 to 72 per cent during the last 24 hours.

The May 30 thunderstorm disrupted road traffic, metro services, flight operations and hit power and water supply.

Nine deaths were reported from around the city during the last thunderstorm

Most areas in city had plunged into darkness immediately after the storm as uprooted trees had snapped power lines while metro train services were disrupted on almost all lines for about an hour due to power failure.

Met department had termed the storm as "cumulonimbus" and attributed it to western disturbance over Pakistan. NCR areas of east Delhi, Noida and Ghaziabad were most affected by the storm.
