DDA's next housing scheme in December 2016

NEW DELHI: The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) will issue the next housing scheme in December 2016.

Top DDA officials said while about 40,000 flats would be ready by year-end, remaining would be completed next year.

"Currently, over 45,000 flats are under construction and over 16,000 flats are at planning stage. About 40,000 flats would be completed by mid-December, out of which 24,660 would be LIG. Rest would be completed in 2017," DDA vice-chairman Balvinder Kumar said.

DDA is currently handing over the flats to successful applicants of its 'Housing Scheme 2014'and Union urban development minister M Venkaiah Naidu is scheduled to officially start the process of allotment at the housing authority's headquarters, Vikas Sadan, tomorrow. Kumar said the flats in the new schemes would be built with modern and green technology.

"Our last scheme had mostly small one-bed room flats but this time we have LIG flats, which are bigger. And, the flats would be built using pre-fab, green and modern technology. They would be located in the same Dwarka, Rohini region as in the last scheme," he said during a media briefing.

'I fund honest party': Arvind Kejriwal launches fund-raising campaign

NEW DELHI: AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal today launched 'I Fund Honest Party' challenge under which he nominated 11 people, including his brother and sister, to donate money for the party ahead of Delhi assembly polls.

Kejriwal kickstarted the campaign by himself donating Rs 10,000 to the party.

The former Delhi chief minister nominated 11 people, which includes industrialist Rajiv Bajaj, actress and party leader Gul Panag, Vipin Mittal, Kejriwal's family friend and dentist, businessman Subhash Khandelwal, his close aide Aswathi Muralidharan, NRIs Amit Agarwal (Hong Kong) and Munish Raizada (USA), Mohammad Kasim, a law student, Kejriwal's IIT batchmate Subroto Saha, his brother and sister Manoj and Ranjana Kejriwal.

His mother Gita Devi has also expressed her willingness to accept the challenge.

These 10 people will nominate 10 more people and urge them to donate for the party.

"I am kickstarting this campaign by paying up Rs 10,000 and challenging 11 people to Fund for Honest politics.

"Like other parties, we dont take money from those who take donations from people owning power discoms. They take their donation, but then they have to dance to the industrialists' tunes. We are taking money from people. So we will work in the interest of the common public," Kejriwal told reporters.

"Anyone can pay as low as Rs 10, if he/she is nominated for the campaign. The names of the donors will be immediately uploaded on the party website," he added.

Incidentally, the campaign is strikingly similar to Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Swachch Bharat Abiyaan, under which he nominates eminent people for carrying the mission forward. The chain is later carry forwarded through those who have been nominated.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi had launched Swachch Bharat Abhiyaan from Valmiki Colony, from where AAP had launched its party symbol "jhadu" (broom), Kajriwal too launched a similar cleanliness campaign near the Race Course Road — the official residence of Modi.

Although AAP has been raising donations through its fund-raising events and campaigns, it is yet to reach the figure of Rs 30 crore, it has set to contest the elections.

AAP's national secretary Pankaj Gupta said through this campaign, the party wants more and more citizens to become "direct stakeholders" in our party.

Challenging the BJP to make its funding public, Kejriwal said AAP is the only party, which has made its donations public and transparent.

"If politics is funded by clean money then the woes of the people can come to an end as any government coming to power will not work under the pressure of industrialists...it will work in the interest of people," Kejriwal said.

To raise money ahead of Delhi assembly election, the party has undertaken several fund-raising drive, which includes meals with Kejriwal.

The party said that the AAP has over 1,00,000 donors since its inception.

A rainy day for Delhi

NEW DELHI: A chilly rainy morning greeted Delhiites today even as the minimum tempearture rose by 2.2 degrees since yesterday, settling three notches above the season's average at 10.2 degrees Celsius.

According to MeT officials, 5.4 mm rainfall was recorded both at the Safdarjung (considered official figure for Delhi) and Palam observatories. Lodhi Road centre recorded 6.7 mm rainfall while the areas under Ayanagar and Ridge recorded 6.8 mm and 3.4 mm rainfall respectively. The Met office has forecast a cloudy day with the possibility of more rainfall.

"The day would be partly cloudy. Very light rain or thundershower could occur in some areas. The maximum temperature will hover at 19 degrees Celsius," said an IMD official.

The visibility at 8.30 AM was 600 metres which improved to 1000 meters at 11.30 AM.

According to the Northern Railway, 42 trains coming to the capital were running late due to fog, 18 were rescheduled and four were cancelled. However, the flight operations were smooth.

Humidity was 98 per cent at 8.30 AM. Yesterday, the maximum temperature was 21.6 degrees Celsius while the minimum had settled at 8.8 degrees Celsius.

Crime against women, rapes up in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Delhi has witnessed an 18.3 per cent rise in crime against women in 2014 as compared to 2013, with a whooping 31.6 per cent rise in rape cases, police said on Friday.

A staggering 14,687 cases were registered under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) up to Dec 15, up from 12,410 in the previous year.

Police commissioner B S Bassi said that in addition to the measures taken by the force, every woman in Delhi would be trained in self-defence.

"We appeal to everyone to join hands with us so that every woman in Delhi gets trained in self-defence. I want every woman to have a brown belt in judo," said Bassi at the Delhi Police's annual press conference.

"For this we also plan to conduct mapping of Delhi so that we can choose the areas from where the women will be trained," he added.

Police data also revealed that 2,069 cases of rape were registered in 2014 compared to 1,571 cases in 2013.

A total of 4,179 molestation cases were reported in 2014 against 3,345 were reported in 2013.

The cases of harassment stood at 1,282 in 2014 compared to 879 in 2013, while the cases of dowry death touched 147 in 2014 as compared to 137 in 2013.

Bassi also emphasised on the fact that to reduce the number of crime against women, the "mindset of the society" needs to be changed.

Family sleeps with gas heater on, all 3 dead

NEW DELHI: Days after four men died of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning inside a closed room in Hauz Khas, a computer engineer, his wife and their six-year-old son were found dead under similar circumstances in south Delhi's Kotla Mubarakpur area on Tuesday. They had gone to bed leaving a gas-burning heater switched on in the room.

Satish Verma (35), his wife Shashi (30) and their son Archit had lived in the two-room flat in Bhagwan Dass Gali for two years. Satish worked at a computer hardware firm in Noida Sector 52 while Shashi was a housewife. Archit studied at a school in Defence Colony.

On Tuesday evening, Satish had switched on the improvised heater-a small gas cylinder with an attachment-after shutting all doors and windows. Around midnight, he called his brother-in-law, Ravinder, to say Shashi and Archit were feeling uneasy and asked him to suggest a medicine. Shashi's family stayed in G-block nearby.

Shashi's mother, Jagwati, got worried and came to see them around 1.30am but got no response on knocking at the door. She went back thinking they were fast asleep and came back in the morning but again got no response. Around 9.30am, Ravinder informed police. A team from the Kotla Mubarakpur police station reached the house, broke open the door and found Satish's body near the door with froth on the mouth.

Shashi and Archit were found dead in a bed. They too had frothed at the mouth. Police first suspected all three had died after consuming poison but found no evidence of it. The gas heater was still burning in a corner of the room.

After preliminary inquiries, forensics experts said the family may have started feeling uneasy as carbon monoxide built up in the room. Archit had vomited a few times and they all passed out around midnight. Satish was probably alive till 1.30am when Jagwati knocked and he collapsed on the floor while dragging himself to the door.

Hemant Kumar, Defence Colony SDM, said they may have survived had they left even the bathroom door open.

Family members said Satish and Shashi met in college and married in 2008. He had shifted to Delhi from Bihar for higher education. His father was a deed writer at a court and one of his younger brothers works with an engineering firm in Dubai.

The bodies were sent for autopsy and an inquest was started into the cause of death. Police have sought an inquiry by a sub-divisional magistrate.

Delhi police give 'Himmat' to women, launch safety app

NEW DELHI: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday launched a mobile-phone based application for the safety of women in New Delhi.

Named 'Himmat' it is an initiative by Delhi Police for women safety. The application was launched basically for the employed women who travelling alone sometimes late at night.

What is Himmat?

The mobile-based application is basically for the safety of women travelling alone. Women can use its features to alert Delhi police in case of any threat.

How to use it?

The Himmat app can be downloaded free of cost from the Delhi Police website - www.delhipolice.nic.in with effect from 04.00pm on 1st January, 2015. This App is only for mobile phones working on Android, since a survey has revealed that most working women use Android based phone. In due course this facility will be extended to other operating systems as well.

How to use it

* Users can download the app - Himmat from Delhi Police website or Google Play

* A new user has to register with the Delhi Police website by sharing their name, mobile number and that of a minimum of two relatives/friends.

* Once the User registers, the user will get a SMS on mobile number given at the time of registration with a download link and registration key. User has to enter this key in the registration window in the application. This is a one-time process.

* Apart from the friends/relatives, an SMS alert relating to the distress is sent simultaneously to police control room. The CPCR takes further action.

* The SMS alert is also transmitted simultaneously by the Police Control Room to the Police Patrol cars in the area and the local Station House Officer (SHO) through the Delhi Police Cyber Highway.

False SOS alerts

Generating false SOS alerts/ alarms, intentionally/ unintentionally, will lead to cancellation of the registration after 3 such (False SOS alerts) incidents. The user must report in an email/ to support number, if in case they want to re-register and activate the facility.

17 AC buses of DTC gutted in fire, probe ordered

NEW DELHI: 17 low floor air-conditioned buses of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) were today gutted in a major fire at Ambedkar Nagar depot in South Delhi in the wee hours.

Nobody was injured. The cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. An inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Fire department said the blaze was reported at 3:20 AM and immediately 11 fire tenders rushed to the spot to douse the flame.

A CNG filling station at the depot also caught fire, the Fire department said.

"17 buses were gutted in the devastating fire," DTC Spokesperson R S Minhas told PTI.

More than 100 AC and non-AC low floor buses were kept in the depot. The AC buses were procured at a cost of over Rs 60 lakh each few years back.

He said a three-member probe panel has been appointed to investigate the incident.

The other buses were immediately taken out of the depot. A fire department official said the cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. "We could douse the fire at around 5:15 AM," he said.

986 motorists get tickets in Delhi on New Year's eve night

NEW DELHI: A staggering 986 motorists were issued tickets in Delhi for violating traffic norms during the New Year's Eve celebrations, police said on Thursday.

The traffic police prosecuted 608 motorists for drunk driving and action was taken against 54 others for dangerous driving.

"A total of 100 teams of Delhi Police were deployed across Delhi and most of the traffic challans (tickets) were issued in the central Delhi areas," Special Commissioner (Traffic) Muktesh Chander told IANS.

"A total of 353 vehicles were impounded for reckless and negligent driving," he added.

Delhi polls: Congress releases first list of 24 candidates

NEW DELHI: Breaking with past practice, Congress on Thursday released its first list of 24 candidates for Delhi Assembly polls repeating all its eight MLAs and 12 others who were runner-ups in the 2013 Assembly election in which the party had suffered a setback.

Usually the Congress list comes during the nomination process. The early release of candidates' name comes at a time when the party is desperately trying to regain the lost ground in Delhi which has a 70-member strong Assembly.

The last election had brought an end to the 15-year-long rule of the party led by Sheila Dikshit, who herself was defeated by AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal in her home constituency New Delhi.

While Congress has so far not declared its candidate for the New Delhi seat, sources have maintained that former chief minister Dikshit will not be contesting this time and will remain a "key campaigner" for the party.

The new faces in the Congress list are ex-Mayor Satbir Singh, who will contest from Mehrauli, and Sachin Bidhuri from Tughlakabad.

Five-time MLA from Matiamahal Shoaib Iqbal, who contested the last Assembly polls on a JD(U) ticket and had joined Congress on November 20, has been fielded from the same seat.

PCC chief Arvinder Singh Lovely, former minister Harun Yusuf, Devendra Yadav, Jaikishan, Prahlad Singh Sawahney, Asif Mohammed Khan, Mateen Ahmed and Hasan Ahmed, who had won the polls last time, have been repeated.

Lovely will contest from his traditional stronghold Gandhinagar from where he was elected four times while Yusuf, a five-time MLA, will fight from Ballimaran.

Jaikishan will seek a fifth term from Sultanpur Majra while three-time MLA Sawahney will contest from his Chandni Chowk seat. Khan gets renominated from Okhla while Mateen Ahmed will seek re-election for the sixth term from Seelampur. Hasan will fight from Mustafabad.

Former Ministers in Sheila Dikshit's Cabinet Raj Kumar Chauhan and A K Walia, who were defeated in the last Assembly election, have also been given the party nomination from Mangolpuri and Laxminagar respectively.
