Protesters cause massive traffic jam in Delhi following road-rage killing

Written By Unknown on Senin, 06 April 2015 | 22.10

NEW DELHI: A massive traffic jam choked parts of central Delhi on Monday as people protested against the killing of a man on Sunday night. The stretch between Turkman Gate and Delhi Gate was blocked.

Traffic came to a halt at ITO, Barakhamba Road, Ranjeet Singh Road, Asaf Ali Road, DB Gupta Road and Paharganj by evening. The situation became worse after the tail back of the jams stretched till the Connaught Place and India Gate which was already heavy due to the peak hour traffic.

By 6pm snarls were reported and traffic officials said that they had deployed additional personnel in these areas to clear the traffic mess but the huge number of vehicles led to a gridlock at the major intersections.

Police said that efforts were being made to remove the protesters from the arterial stretches. "The district police have asked to ensure passage of vehicles heading towards north Delhi so that the back log can be eased out," said a traffic police officer.

The incident took place around 11.30pm when the victim, identified as Shahnawaz (38), was returning home from a wedding on his motorcycle along with his two children Fahad (13) and Kaif (9).

As they reached Turkman Gate, the bike hit an i-20 car, which had 5 occupants, police said.

An argument ensued between the occupants of the car and the motorcyclist which soon took an ugly turn with Shahnawaz beaten up badly. He was later taken to the nearest hospital where he was declared dead, police said.

"The case is of road rage but personal enmity is being probed. One of the accused, Waseem (24), has been arrested. All of them have been identified and are locals of the same area. Allegations of locals against police are also being 'looked at'," said Delhi top cop BS Bassi.

HC okays rash driving term

NEW DELHI: A person is supposed to drive a vehicle on the correct side and respect the rights of others on the road, a Delhi court has observed while upholding the conviction of a man for rash driving.

The court's observations came on an appeal filed by a truck driver challenging his conviction and two years' sentence by a magisterial court in a 14-year-old rash and negligent driving case which resulted in the death of a scooter rider coming from an opposite direction.

"Any person driving a vehicle on the road is supposed to respect the rights of others, using the road. He is supposed to have complete control over his vehicle and is required to drive on the correct side and not to intrude upon the space meant for traffic coming from the opposite direction," additional sessions judge Kanwal Jeet Arora said

The court, while dismissing the appeal regarding his conviction, also said the "duty of driver of a vehicle becomes more onerous while driving the vehicle on a single road".

The court, however, reduced the two-year jail term awarded to Bharat Singh to one-year sentence and imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 taking into account that he was 50-year-old and now physically challenged. It added that he has faced the agony of a protracted trial.

He died minutes after I fed him: Delhi road-rage victim's mother

NEW DELHI: Holding his torn and blood-soaked black t-shirt close to her heart, the mother of 38-year-old Shahnawaz who was beaten to death in a road rage incident, on Monday said that she could never imagine that she would hear about her son's murder a few minutes after she fed him.

Fifty-year-old Noorjahan, who could not hold back her tears, told IANS: "I fed him food minutes before they killed him...those cruel people killed my son. They should be arrested soon."

Shahnawaz, who owns an electrical shop, was returning home from a family function with his sons on a motorbike when it was hit by a car near Turkman Gate in Daryaganj around 11.30pm on Sunday. The car occupants beat him to death.

Police on Monday arrested one of the accused, Wasim, and are on the lookout for the remaining four accused.

The accident spot is hardly a few metres away from Shahnawaz's parents' house.

"My son and two grandsons came to our house after a family function. Here, they ate food and left around 11.15pm for their home on Mata Sundari Road," said Noorjahan, sitting in her Turkman Gate house in the old quarter of Delhi. Shahnawaz owned an electrical shop on Mata Sundari Road.

Clutching the black t-shirt that her son was wearing, the bereaved mother said there was heavy traffic on the road due to a marriage in the area.

Eyewitnesses told police that around four to five men were inside the car which slightly bumped Shahnawaz's bike.

According to the eyewitnesses, the driver of the car told Shahnawaz to move his vehicle but when the victim said he was unable to do so due to the heavy traffic, an argument broke out.

"Seeing the argument, my grandsons Fahad (13) and Kaif (nine) rushed to the police post situated across the road where they pleaded with two policemen to help their father...however, to no avail," she told IANS.

"On receiving no help, they came running to me and said 'Abbu ki kisi se ladai ho gayi hai' (Father has got into a fight with someone)," she added.

But by the time the family reached the spot it was too late. The family rushed the heavily bleeding Shahnawaz, lying on the road, to the nearby Lok Nayak Jaiprakash Hospital where he was declared brought dead.

The grieving mother, who was being consoled by family members, said she will never forget the sight she saw.

"He was on the road and foaming at the mouth...he was declared brought dead at the hospital," she said, adding that "those responsible for my son's death are local goons and they should be immediately arrested".

The victim's father, 60-year-old Salauddin, a scrap dealer, told IANS: "Shahnawaz was my eldest son. He is no more because of the barbaric act by some goons of the area."

Shahnawaz has three younger brothers - Wasim (33), Faisal (32) and Suhail (19).

He has three children - two sons - who witnessed the crime - and a daughter, Talbia (five).

Salauddin said his daughter-in-law Farzana, 33, is in a state of shock.

"She has been unconscious ever since she heard about Shahnawaz's death. My two grandsons also are in a state of shock.

"Fahad was also hit by the goons and is extremely terrified after the incident," Salauddin told IANS.

Local people and the victim's relatives protested against the police and damaged a few vehicles.

A large posse of policemen along with paramilitary force was deployed in the Turkman Gate area due to the simmering tension.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Parmaditya said the accused will be arrested soon.
