Delhi police ask radio station to stop playing AAP jingle

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police have asked FM radio channels in the national capital to stop playing an Aam Aadmi Party jingle which according to them is defaming the force.

In the advertisement, a girl is heard saying that some men passed lewd comments at her while she was on her way back home.

She further claims that policemen were reluctant to file her complaint when she went to the police station and rather asked her to provide evidence of the incident.

Frustrated with the volley of questions, the girl leaves the police station without registering a complaint and is then heard asking people to vote for AAP to ensure women security in Delhi.

"We have asked the radio stations to stop this jingle and will ask AAP to provide us details of the girl whether she is a real victim or an imaginary character.

"If it is a true incident, we would probe it and take strict action against the guilty policemen but if its imaginary, it is defaming the police," said a senior police official.

Police has also directed the radio stations to take clearance before playing any such jingles in future.

Four judges to join Delhi HC

NEW DELHI: Four additional judges have been named for the Delhi high court, raising its strength to 37.

P S Teji, IS Mehta, RK Gauba and Delhi high court registrar general Sangita Dhingra Sehgal will take oath on December 15.

They will be administered the oath of office by Chief Justice G Rohini.

Speeding cab driver mows down two cops in Delhi, third critical

NEW DELHI: An errant cab driver mowed down two cops and injured another in a bid to escape picket checking at a barricade in Kalindi Kunj area of southeast Delhi early Sunday.

The cops had flagged down a speeding cab at a police picket but the driver stepped on the gas instead and rammed into the barricade. He then went on to hit the policemen who tried to stop him.

The rogue driver was allegedly drunk and even dragged the policemen for about 100 metres after hitting them. He was chased and nabbed by other cops some distance away from the spot.

The cabbie has been identified as Hemant from Ghaziabad. He was driving an Eeco car and has been arrested under sections of causing death due to negligence (304A IPC) and rash driving (279 IPC).

The two slain cops were posted at Jaitpur police station. They have been identified as ASI Nagender and constable Prahlad. The injured cop head constable Kaptaan was admitted at Apollo hospital.

Delhi DCP tweets live updates about Uber rape case

NEW DELHI: In a first, Delhi Police got its district DCP tweeting live updates about every development in the investigation of the Uber rape case registering its presence on social media.

Deputy commissioner of police (North) Madhur Verma under whose jurisdiction the incident had taken place, tweeted through his official handle @DCP_North_Delhi during the investigation of the case.

Unlike the December 16 case, Delhi Police has been appreciated for speedy investigation in the case and even the father of the victim had offered to give cash award of Rs 1 lakh to the police personnel investigating the case which the officials politely refused saying that it's part of their job.

"Questioning of Uber's Asia head Eric Alexander revealed that Uber needs major improvements to reach the safety standards what they promise," said one of Verma's tweet on December 10 after police questioned the Hongkong-based Uber executive.

The same evening when Nidhi Shah, a US-based woman tweeted about alleged indecent behaviour of the Uber rape case accused during her India visit in November, Verma had contacted her on twitter to register a complaint.

"@nps2113 A formal police complaint can be received through E-mail also. It is must to set the criminal justice system in motion," he had tweeted. Since then, police is in contact with Shah for filing a formal complaint.

The officer, who has been lauded both online and offline for his efforts in handling the case, got the number of his followers swell to more than 2.5 thousand after he started tweeting about the case. His followers included a number of senior journalists, celebrities and activists.

Kejriwal will address over 85 poll rallies in Delhi

NEW DELHI: With growing demand from party candidates to campaign in their constituencies, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal will address over 85 rallies over the next two months.

Party sources said the former Delhi chief minister will address 25 rallies in December and 60 rallies in January, with a target of at least one rally in each constituency and two in some constituencies.

"The target is to have at least one jan sabha every constituency. There are constituencies which require him to campaign more than once. As of today, he (Kejriwal) is holding two rallies every day in different constituencies.

"It will intensify as the campaigning heats up. We haven't planned anything for February as yet but once we come to know about election dates, we will do that accordingly," the source added.

Kejriwal will also address road rallies just near the polls.

Sources added that the party is also receiving request from party candidates for Bhagwant Mann, party MP from Sangrur in Punjab, to campaign in their constituencies.

The comedian-turned politician is one of the star campaigners for AAP.

There are others who will join the campaign once election dates are announced.

These include music composer Vishal Dadlani, actress Gul Panag, party leader and noted poet Kumar Vishwas.

"The advantage of Bhagwant Mann is that he is bilingual and is a good orator. He can speak in Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi and can easily connect with the masses.

"So he can campaign in constituencies which are dominated by Poorvanchalis, Punjabi and Sikhs, which itself constitutes a large population spread across all the constituencies," the source said.

Second, he is also extremely popular among the party volunteers.

"The only problem is that he also has to go back to his constituency and has specific dates because of which we cannot campaign in all the constituencies. But as election nears, he will increase his sabhas. As of now, he addresses two jan sabhas everyday," a party source added.

The party has also pressed in over 250 projectors across Delhi to intensify its campaign. The party has used this technique in the last assembly elections also.

"We have one projector every ward, which screens a short movie comprising speeches of Arvind Kejriwal, party's policy and its agenda and how it plans to deal with different kinds of issues plaguing the national capital," said party spokesperson Atishi Marlena.

3 held for senior’s murder

NEW DELHI: Three scrap dealers have been arrested by East district police on Friday for murdering a 65-year-old businessman in Gandhi Nagar on Monday. Police said that the accused had fled with antique coins and silver worth a few lakhs after strangling the man with the piece of cloth. They had thought that the man who was shifting his house would have valuables stored in his locker.

"The accused has been identified as Nimakat Ali, Musheer and Fazal were arrested from their village in Badayun district of Uttar Pradesh by a team led by senior officers from the district," said Ajay Kumar, DCP, East. Ajeet Goyal was found dead on the floor of his bedroom.

‘A’ rating for city university

NEW DELHI: The National Assessment and Accreditation Council has awarded an 'A' to Ambedkar University, Delhi. AUD is the first university of its generation—it was established in 2008—to get accredited. "Several universities came up during the same period, including central universities, but they haven't even applied yet," says Praveen Singh, convenor of the steering committee for the process.

"There are funds available for Rashtriya Ucchatar Shiksha Abhiyan. You can apply after you get accreditated. That'll be a big help," says Singh.

Mercury dips to 5.1°C in Delhi

NEW DELHI: Winter is finally here. In a first for the season, both the maximum and minimum temperatures fell below normal on Friday. Light smog was recorded through the day, a result of high levels of humidity in the light of an approaching western disturbance.

Delhi's maximum temperature fell to 22.3 degrees Celsius, one degree below normal while the minimum was 5.1 degrees Celsius, three degrees below normal. Humidity levels touched a high of 91%. While Lodhi Road and Narela recorded the lowest night temperatures at 4.3 degrees and 4.8 degrees Celsius respectively in Delhi, Gurgaon saw the minimum plunge to a freezing 2.4 degrees Celsius.

"An active western disturbance that is over Pakistan at present will move over the western Himalayan region by Saturday and bring light rain and thundershowers to Delhi and neighbouring areas. Minimum temperatures will rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius over northwest and adjoining central India and maximum temperatures would fall by 3-4 degrees Celsius over the same area during the next two-three days. Fog is expected to occur at isolated places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and sub-Himalayan West Bengal and Sikkim till Monday," said an official. The rain will be caused by an interaction of WD with an easterly wave, bringing rain and thundershowers at a few places of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan till November 15 and decrease thereafter.

Met officials said it was likely to start becoming cloudy from Friday night. "Light rain and thundershowers are expected from the night of November 12 and continue till November 14. Meanwhile, light to moderate rain and snow are also expected at some places over Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand between the night of December 12 and December 15," said an official.

Cops scuttle stir for judicial reform

NEW DELHI: A protest in front of Delhi high court by litigants demanding judicial reforms was scuttled by the Delhi Police at the last moment on Friday. The protestors, mostly those with cases pending in various Delhi courts for years together, attempted to form a human chain with placards on Sher Shah Suri Marg.

But even as they assembled in the morning, local police arrived and broke up the protests, and detained the group at Tilak Marg police station. "They asked for a permission to protest outside high court. They weren't given any permission. When they were protesting they were detained for a few hours at PS Tilak Marg. This was done under section 65 of Delhi Police Act," Vijay Singh, DCP (New Delhi), told TOI.

The litigants, however, remained defiant, saying there was no reason to deny permission to raise the issue of delay in justice and that their fundamental right to freedom of expression was violated by police. "We applied for permission for the rally on December 2. There was no word from them till just 24 hours before the protests. Suddenly they decided it may cause a law and order problem and declined our plea. If merely saying that we want justice not adjournments in court can pose danger to law and order, we wonder what will happen to democracy in this country," founder of Fight4judicial Reforms, Gulshan Pahuja, said.

Pahuja said the demand of the protestors for swift disposal of cases is valid and no one has asked that cases must be ruled in their favour. "We only want justice not delay." The human chain was supposed to raise awareness about pendency of cases in Delhi and came in the backdrop of an earlier protest staged by litigants last week. Some claimed they have suffered 1,500-1,900 dates. Litigants were brought together by Pahuja and another NGO Forum for Fast Justice Janhit Manch.

Man, kin held for double murder

NEW DELHI: Sleuths from the crime branch were in for a surprise when they rounded up a person for questioning while investigating the Kamla Nagar heist. He confessed having committed the double murder of his kin with an associate as well as several robberies. The duo even admitted they had planned a different cash van heist over the next few days though they were not involved in this one.

Pradeep Verma, a bus driver who is accused in a 2012 robbery case, was picked up for questioning. A .32 bore pistol and two rounds of bullets were found on him. Pradeep then confessed that he was in a pact with his uncle Suresh, who murdered their nephew and niece over the last one month and dumped their bodies in a drain in Sarita Vihar. A team led by DCP Bhisham Singh and ACP K P S Malhotra then arrested Suresh Verma from his house in south Delhi.

Suresh, also a bus driver, told police he had four brothers of whom the eldest, Raj Kumar, owned a property at a JJ colony on Captain Gaur Marg. His son Rohit and daughter Gunjan, who's married to a trader in Loni, were to receive his property after his death as his wife had died earlier this year. Suresh and Pradeep decided to usurp the property by killing both of them.

In October, Suresh invited Gunjan to accompany him to a party and took her in their bus where he strangled her. A case was registered at Sarita Vihar police station but Pradeep blamed Gunjan's in-laws. A few days later, he took Rohit on a similar trip and murdered him in the same manner. In the meantime, Rajkumar, who was ailing and in his deathbed, passed.

Pradeep, in jail since 2012, got released on bail, came to know about the murders and threatened Suresh that he would inform police. A frightened Suresh decided he would sell the property and share the proceeds with Pradeep. Pradeep had planned to rob a cash van in Dwarka and arranged for the pistol and a stolen bike from Janakpuri in west Delhi.
