Baby boom in Delhi zoo

NEW DELHI: Khushi has every reason to be happy, for she is a mother of two healthy white tiger cubs now. But she has not dropped her guard: she is alert and reacts to the slightest sound or movement, lest something or someone harms the two fur balls she has been nursing since January 12.

White tigers have been born in Delhi zoo after five years. The zoo already has seven white tigers of which two are males and the rest females. One of the females will be sent to Russia in exchange for a cougar pair.

But the birth of the tiger cubs isn't the only positive news in Delhi zoo. "A number of births have been reported. There's a greathorned owlet; blackbuck, swamp deer, spotted deer, and sambar fawns have been born; and there are many pelican chicks too," said zoo curator Riaz Ahmad Khan, adding, "Two emus and a barn owl have laid eggs too."

While all the offsprings have been reported to be healthy and content, the fawn of the Sambar lies alone in the zoo hospital. Officials say after being rejected by the mother, the fawn was transferred to the hospital where it is being hand-reared.

Also this year, the Delhi zoo reported a drop in the number of nests and chicks of the painted stork. Officials counted around 810 chicks in 300 nests as compared to 1,200 chicks in 350 nests last year. Officials are attributing this drop in number to the erratic monsoon in the country.
