The New York-based DDT, which has enjoyed two successful seasons of the show in NYC, is excited at bringing the production to the capital for its Indian premiere. Entry is by invitation and free of charge.
Directed by American choreographer Leah Curtis, the DDT explores expressions in Indian classical and Western dance techniques, accompanied by an original live musical score.
For Curtis, who has worked with various Indian artists, DDT was born out of her desire to unite Western classical dance with the traditional dance forms of India. "DDT develops and explores new movement that stays true to the traditions of classical dance but is progressive, colourful, and evolving," says Curtis.
Beneath the Tamarind Tree uses elements of ballet, modern dance and Kathak in rhythmic themes. The performance will feature a new team of Delhi-based artists alongside its original cast and choreographers of Leah Raphael Curtis (US), Emily McLaughlin (UK) and Lydia Walker (US).
Highlights of the event include original compositions by Fakhroddin Ghaffari (Iran), a noted percussionist and part of MTV Coke Studio Season II. Ghaffari has worked with Abida Parveen and is the founder of the Delhi-based band, World Ethnic Music Ensemble.
