Secondary chargesheet in Nirbhaya case soon

NEW DELHI: Delhi Police will file a secondary chargesheet in the Nirbhaya rape case before pressing charges against the rape accused for robbing a carpenter named Ramadhar Singh on the same night. Police say the decision was taken to ensure that the gang rape case gets priority. However, sources say, the police action will be determined by circumstances.

The forensic and postmortem reports will provide the key arguments in the rape case. "We want to ensure we do not get distracted from our primary aim of furnishing every possible piece of evidence before the court,'' said an investigating officer.

Sources said police are waiting for the final postmortem report and the CFSL reports — including findings of the teeth mark test and hair match — before finalizing the second chargesheet. "The Singapore hospital had sent its reports about Nirbhaya's injuries at the time of death but the final postmortem report will be prepared by Safdarjung Hospital, where she was admitted initially,'' said an officer.

Sources said that a draft of the chargesheet for the Ramadhar case is ready. "We are waiting for confirmation about Ramadhar's snatched phone being used by the accused and whether the same rod was used to beat up Nirbhaya's friend and Ramadhar,'' said an officer. He added that they will get the chargesheet in the Ramadhar case vetted by legal experts. "Even this process should not take too long once we are over with the Nirbhaya case,'' the officer added.

The chargesheet in the Ramadhar case will relate how the six rape accused had initially tried to pick up a fight with the driver of a mini-truck that brushed pushed their bus and how, after dumping Ramadhar, they targeted another girl when she was trying to board an auto near Munirka. She had escaped in an auto.

The accused told police they dumped Ramadhar Singh at the same place after robbing him. According to the accused, they were celebrating the birthday of their friend, Murari, at the house of co-accused Akshay Thakur in Ravidas Camp, RK Puram. Police claim it was the main rape accused, Ram Singh, who suggested that the birthday celebrations of their friend would not be complete without a sex worker.

"Around 8.30pm, the accused stopped their bus to offer Ramadhar Singh a ride. The carpenter boarded the bus and then they robbed him of his wallet containing Rs 1,500 and his Nokia phone. They also thrashed him and dumped him at IIT flyover," an officer said.
