NEW DELHI: A shrine at the site of the Kishanganj road underbridge (RUB) has become a hurdle for North Delhi Municipal Corporation's engineers. Although work on the RUB, which will cost Rs 56 crore to finish, is largely done, the road cannot be opened till the temple is relocated.

The corporation's engineers aren't demolishing the temple as it is a sensitive issue. "There is a temple in the way of the Kishanganj RUB, near Azad Market. The project, which is already four years late, is likely to face more delays due to this. We have repeatedly sought relocation of the temple but nothing has been done. Even if we expedite the work and complete the project by this year-end, the RUB will not be opened till the temple is relocated," said a north corporation engineer working on the project.

The matter of relocation has been entrusted to the Delhi Religious Committee. "It's a very old temple and has been here for decades," said Mahender Nagpal, leader of the House, North Delhi Municipal Corporation.

For the construction of the RUB, the unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi had relocated shops in 2008. Except for the relocation, everything has been successfully done. "The temple is pracheen and some structures are best left untouched," said Ramesh, caretaker of the temple. Surprisingly, even the caretaker's room has been left untouched.

At present, railways is carrying out the work. "The project was taken up by both railways and the MCD. Railways has to construct four boxes and they are yet to finish one box. This will take another one-and-a-half years and after that the corporation will give finishing touches to the project," said the engineer.

But residents and commuters have to suffer traffic jams every day. "Due to the construction of this RUB, Azad Market and Rani Jhansi Road are always jammed. The road has narrowed down so much that it's impossible to avoid the jam. It is uncertain when the under-bridge will open but every day we residents live the nightmare," said Ashok Bhasin, president, North Delhi RWAs Federation.

Bhasin also pointed out that an NDPL generator is in the way. "An NDPL generator is in the way. When we approached the agency they asked us to pay Rs 10 lakh for its relocation," he said. Corporation officials say the matter has been resolved and NDPL will soon shift its generator.
