Chinese ring in tunnel to ITO

A group of Chinese engineers , working along with Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, has been quietly burrowing a tunnel about 16 metres below Sikandra Road since January. On Monday , a TOI team discovered it working right below the Tilak Bridge bus stop , having crossed the road and headed for ITO. It will not reach before March 15 though .

With a December 2013 deadline , Delhi Metro is, meanwhile , racing to finish the Central Secretariat-M andi House track . DP Saini , director (projects ), is hopeful that DMRC will be able to deliver a new year gift to Delhi. "We are trying to complete the track by the year-end so that pressure can be taken off the Rajiv Chowk station ." TOI was given an exclusive glimpse of the work going on under the Mandi House station , from where the Central Secretariat corridor continues towards Kashmere Gate . A spanking new station is coming up there .

The heritage line , as the 9.37-km Central Secretariat-K ashmere Gate corridor is called because of its proximity to many monuments , has six tunnel boring machines (TBMs) working on it. Of these six , two TBMs are working on the stretch between Mandi House and ITO. "Since the TBM was going under the existing Blue line (near the Tilak Marg crossing ), we had a short window to complete the work under the ramp," says Shen Chengming , project director for L&T-SUCG JV, the contractor for the segment . The deadline is so tight that the workforce , which is largely Chinese , worked through the Chinese New Year , said Shen , a Shanghai resident who has made the capital home since 2008 and laps up a samosa with chutney with the ease of a stout Dilliwallah .

The heritage line is located 9m below the existing ramp for the Dwarka-Noida / Vaishali line and runs for 80 m alongside the corridor . "The work had to be meticulous as it's coming up under an operational corridor ," adds Shen .

The under-construction tunnel is dank and humid but provided with a constant stream of air . The 'up' tunnel - which goes from Mandi House to ITO - and which TOI walked through on Monday is now 300 m long . It has another 300 metres to cover before it reaches ITO. The TBM, cutting through the soil, covers 12 metres daily , making steady progress . Daily eight precast concrete rings - which have four segments each - are put in place to take the tunnel forward . The entire 750m distance - from Mandi House to ITO - will have 456 rings lining the tunnel - of these, 200 are already in place . The work on the down tunnel has just started .

The segments of the rings , which are pre-cast at a yard in Mundka , are made of concrete with plyboard along the side and water-proof gaskets . These segments are fitted into place with screws immediately after the TBM has made its way , with the help of a segment erector . The plyboard prevents the concrete segments from cracking as they are placed side-by-side and screwed while the gasket prevents water from seeping into the tunnel .

The 'down' tunnel , which goes from ITO to Mandi House, has covered only 60 m till date ie. around 40 rings.
