The proposal, which will help provide a safe and reliable transport facility "especially to women", was today cleared by the Standing Committee of East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) and it will be placed before the House on February 19.
Yogendra Mann Director of Press and Information of EDMC said the service will be known as Green autos through which the corporation seeks to provide hassle free transportation to residents.
"The aim of the project is to provide auto rickshaw at the door steps round the clock at government notified meter based fare. The meter will start from the point passenger boards the rickshaw. This will also help in providing a safe and reliable system to the public, especially women," the proposal read.
Similar autorickshaw service is being run in various cities in Gujarat by Nirmal Foundation, Mann said adding once the House approves the proposal, efforts will be made to launch it at the earliest.
The proposed service in East Delhi will also be run by Nirmal Foundation, Mann said.
According to the proposal, a central call center will be set up through which calls made by customers will be directed to drivers, like in case of radio taxis.
While the Nirmal Foundation will bear all the cost of starting the service, the EDMC will assist by giving space for setting up the call center. The corporation will coordinate with Delhi Police to verify antecedants of drivers of the new autorickshaw service.
