53-year-old Hemant Chaudhary, who concealed his real identity and called himself as S K Tiwari, was arrested from Anand Vihar ISBT yesterday when he was trying to flee to Bihar where he bought a property by spending Rs 18 lakh from the looted money.
Police acted on a complaint filed by a New Delhi-based businessman that Rs 28 lakh was stolen from inside his car on January seven and that his guard was missing from his house since then.
After over a month-long investigation, police arrested Chaudhary yesterday from Anand Vihar ISBT when he was about to board a bus to go to Bihar.
"Rs 8.5 lakh in cash, two pass books in the name of Hemant Choudhary and S K Tiwari and other incriminating documents were recovered. He was arrested under appropriate sections of law," S B S Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Crime and Railways, said.
"For 17 long years he kept his identity concealed, only to betray the faith of his employer on the fateful day when he decamped with Rs 27.95 lakh and fled to Bihar where he had purchased property worth Rs 18 lakh," Tyagi said.
He said the accused had packed off his family to his native Muzzafarpur in Bihar and meticulously planned the robbery.
"While performing his duty he got access to all corners of the residence. He carefully noticed movements and was very well aware that huge cash was kept in the car," he said.
