First lot of EWS flats to be complete by month end

NEW DELHI: The first lot of flats for the economically weaker sections (EWS) are nearing completion and will be ready by the end of the month. These 2,400 flats are built with the special pre-fabricated technology in a first for any housing project under Delhi Development Authority (DDA). The Authority is now working on a policy to decide the allotment of these flats, by auction or draw.

In a first, DDA has used prefabricated technology to construct these housing units. The technology involves use of precast columns, beams, slabs, staircases, and the flats are assembled at the site itself. While 2,400 housing units have been built in Sector 23 in Dwarka, 11,060 houses are going come up in Rohini and 6,580 in Narela using this technology. The flats in Dwarka are almost complete, while the others are expected to be complete by the year end. Work on the Rohini flats were delayed by about seven months because some nearby villagers were protesting. But that issue has since been resolved and work is going on in full swing,'' said an official. The allotment process for the flats is yet to be worked out and officials say they might be a part of the next housing scheme whenever it is announced.

The pre-fab technology is a first for Delhi but is a technology commonly used in abroad and even in other Indian cities. Official said that the company roped in for this has done pre-fab projects in Mahashtra. In Dwarka, the nearly complete flats each has one bedroom, a bathroom with ceramic tiles, a kitchen and a lobby area. Each building has five storeys. Officials said that all housing complexes will have amenities like grocery shops, parks, community centres, chowkidar hut, parking spaces and an anganwadi centre in each block. The complex will be pedestrian friendly, with vehicular movement limited to the peripheries. The proof-checking of structural designs for these flats has been done by IIT Roorkee. DDA's target is to build one lakh EWS houses every year, and the recently announced budget has focused majorly on low-cost housing.
