Women's safety debate to rock budget session

NEW DELHI: The budget session of Delhi assembly will begin on Wednesday under the shadow of growing public outrage over safety of women in the Capital. As the government prepares to dazzle voters with a pre-poll budget next week and present itself as a people-friendly dispensation, the BJP is gearing up to corner the ruling party on women's safety, hike in power tariff, water tariff and the much-delayed regularization of unauthorized colonies.

Leader of opposition V K Malhotra said in a statement that the BJP is set to corner the government on 'failure' of the transport department to regulate public service vehicles in wake of the December 16 gang-rape on Yamuna pollution. The Congress response was equally forceful. "We are ready to discuss any issue in the House," Mukesh Sharma, parliamentary secretary of chief minister Sheila Dikshit, said. Speaker Yoganand Shastri said notices for 844 questions have been received. The government will present a number of bills including Delhi Water Board (Amendment) Bill, 2013 in the house.
