They were clever . They interacted through the online utility , 'Whatsapp' , and exchanged calls through secret numbers which were known to none . They did all they could to dodge cops and succeeded, too, for two weeks. A night before the murder , Nitesh went to a nightclub as well to have an alibi about his whereabouts . However , small mistakes like breaking his phone on the day of the murder and petty lies like claiming not to know Sehrawat or Pratibhanand finally proved to be the undoing of Nitesh Kumar and Baljeet Sehrawat , who allegedly conspired to kill Deepak Bharadwaj . Sehrawat told cops that Nitesh knew phoneswere a hazard andcould nailthem which is why he had got the app installed . The cops are now trying to retrieve the chats .They have also requested the forensic teams to hand over copies of CCTV footage of the farmhouse so that they could establish how the shooters , Rana and Mann , accompanied by Pratibhanand , recceed the farmhouse . A source said there were various links missing in the beginning . The police got their first lead from the registration number of the Skoda (DL 6C J 7062) used by the killers . Tracing the number , they reached the owner of the car , Rakesh , who feigned innocence and claimed his friends had borrowed the car . The Skoda was subsequently recovered and Rakesh's interrogation led them to nab Amit , who was driving it on the day of the murder . Soon , police pressure made the shooters come out of their hiding places and surrender . One of them , Purushottam Rana , was nabbed from Patiala House court by crime branch sleuths. The second accused , Sunil Mann , was also caught there . Their interrogation revealed Pratibhanand's role .

A senior police officer said Nitesh had broken his cellphone the day Bhardwaj was killed. When asked to hand over his phone , he claimed , it had slipped from his hand when he was trying to hold his father's body . This aroused the suspicion of the investigators . Nitesh was using four mobiles and he had held back one number from the cops .

Call details record (CDR) played a crucial rolein unravelling theconspiracy and atleast 200 numberswere analysedby thespecialtask force and the local police . When they eventually detected the number he had held back , their suspicion becamestronger .This alsoled to a number which Sehrawat was using .

Sehrawat's detention was the tipping point . The cops came to know that Sehrawat had visited Pratibhanand's house as well as Prushottam's Jhajjar house. He could not give a plausible reason . Nitesh, meanwhile , was questioned a number of times at Vasant Kunj police station but was able to dodge the interrogators each time . He constantly lied to a team led by Addl DCP P S Kushwah about his contacts with Sehrawat .

When Sehrawat was confronted with evidence , he gave contradictory statements which nailed him . Finally , he revealed the role of Nitesh and Ramesh Kumari as conspirators . Nitesh was easy to crack after the cops got clinching evidence against him . However , they are yet to gather evidence against Ramesh Kumari and are verifying Sehrawat's claims .
