NEW DELHI: Baljeet Singh Sehrawat , 51, a lawyer who specialized in property-related cases for the past one-and a-half decades , has emerged as the chief conspirator in the murder of Deepak Bhardwaj. However , the resident of Nangal Dewat near Kishangarh in south Delhi is known among his friends more as a property dealer with high political ambitions .

According to DCP (south) Chhaya Sharma , Sehrawat was in regular contact with Bhardwaj and had earlier worked as a commission agent in a few of his property deals . "He was also aspiring to contest the upcoming Delhi assembly elections from Mahipalpur assembly seat for a national party . When Nitesh contacted him for the job, Sehrawat offered to execute the killing if he funded his election campaign . Later , he changed his mind and the amount was finalized at Rs 5 crore . A part payment of Rs 50 lakh was made to Sehrawat in advance for meeting expenses while the remaining sum was to be paid after the job was done ,"said additional DCP (south) K S Khuswah .

Police sources said Sehrawat had about a decade ago helped Deepak Bhardwaj seal three land deals in the capital . However , it was only two years ago that Bhardwaj stuck two deals on behalf of Nitesh in the south Delhi area and two came close to each other .

The father of two — his son studies in Class XI while his daughter has just passed out of Class XII — had first met another accused , Swami Pratibhanand , for the first time in June last year through two common friends .

Both Sehrawat and Pratibhanand were impressed with each other's social circles . Sehrawat saw how several MLAs, even from other states , came to Delhi to meet the swami . He readily agreed to host him at his residence in October and November . It was during a casualdinner discussion thatthetwo first spoke about Nitesh's plans . In January , the deal was sealed and two attempts were made on Bhardwaj before he was finally shot on March 26.

"We are investigating his political motives along with financial motives ," said a police officer .

"Baljeet hid a number of important phone numbers from us. He was initially a tough nut to crack but broke down two days ago ," said an officer .
