NEW DELHI: It's that time of the year again when the capital braces for an evening of Urdu poetry at the annual international mushairaJashn-e-Bahar.
The mushaira's latest edition, now in its 15th year, will be held at DPS, Mathura Road on Friday. A gathering of nine shayars (poets) from abroad will add to the occasion. They are: Hiroji Kataoka (Japan), Omar Salim Alaidroos Jeddah (Saudi Arabia) and Max Bruce (USA), Mona Shahab,(USA), Farhat Shahzad, (USA) and Zakia Ghazal (Canada). Fahmida Riaz, Harris Khalique and Kishwar Naheed will be coming from Pakistan.
Also participating are top Urdu poets from India such as Waseem Barelvi and Javed Akhtar. Others from India include Sheen Kaaf Nizam, Mansoor Usmani, Popular Meeruthi, Nusrat Mehdi, Aqeel Nomani and Aalok Srivastava who will recite their ghazals and nazms.
This year's mushaira aims to lay emphasis on Urdu as a language for academic pursuits. "We want Urdu to be made compulsory in all schools up to the fifth standard. Urdu is not just a language, but a complete culture that needs to be nurtured," says Kamna Prasad, founder of the Jashn-e-Bahar Trust that organizes the annual mushaira.
According to Prasad, poetry unites cultures and mushairas empower the language of poems."Urdu represents the best of India's multi-culturalism. The very fact that Urdu is evolving and changing shows that it's alive and thriving. All we need to do is encourage it," says Prasad.
Kapil Sibal, union minister of communication and information technology, will be the chief guest. He will also release the book, Nazir-e-Benazir, a collection of verses of Nazi Akbarabadi, a people's poet. "Akabarabadi was the poet of the common man. He was born in 1735 and lived till the age of 95. He wrote in simple language for the common people. His varied subjects ranged from barsaat (rain), Holi, Diwali, Eid and even til ke laddoo (a form of Indian sweet)," says Prasad.
Organized with the support of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, the entry to the mushaira is by invitation.
