2 pipelines leak near Wazirabad

NEW DELHI: Two water pipelines along the Ghaziabad-Wazirabad highway leaked on Wednesday, threatening to flood Shri Ram Colony, Khajuri Khas and areas along the Sonia Vihar water treatment plant. Emergency operations were launched to plug the leaks, but the highway leading to the Wazirabad bridge had to be shut down.

Engineers found that the back flow was caused due to an open manhole in a pipeline laid down by the UP Jal Nigam downstream of Wazirabad as an outfall for treated sewage water. Due to this open manhole, river water entered the pipeline with force and caused the leakage.

At Khajuri Khas, a crowd had gathered after a leak was spotted in the pipeline. Chief engineer (Irrigation and Flood) V P S Tomar told TOI that there was a gap below one of the pipelines running below the arterial highway. With the Yamuna raging with full strength, the small gap was enough to cause the outflow. Tomar said that the PWD was doing its best and the crisis will be averted.

Meanwhile, PWD minister Raj Kumar Chauhan visited the spots ad directed DTTDC to check for any further trouble spots along the under-construction approaches to the state government's Signature Bridge project at Wazirabad.
