The cell has also started gathering intelligence on movements in the explosive supply groups. Licenced traders in the city dealing in sale of ammonium nitrate have been sensitized to double check the antecedents of buyers. The police are also trying to find out if there has been any unusual movement in the sleeper cells.
Sleuths said there were reasons to believe that the IM was involved in the Bodh Gaya blasts despite the bomb being hidden in gas cylinders. "IM has been executing multiple strikes at one time and has not refrained from experimenting. It's possible that the cylinders were used to save explosives from getting wet in the rain as IM members had faced this problem in the Pune blasts. Secondly, the cylinders ought to have more impact as the body of the cylinder itself acts like hard hitting splinters causing more damage," a senior police officer said.
Also, there are chances that the executors of the Bodh Gaya blasts were absolutely 'fresh'. This is evident from the intensity of the blasts despite terrorists having used improvised explosive device (IED) in gas cylinders. The timing and even the placement of the bomb indicated rawness as an experienced terrorist would not have gone to the extent of keeping bombs in places like Buddha's statue, 20 feet above the ground.
The arrests of IM operatives in different states shows that they have been able to keep clear of known criminals or SIMI cadres except for a few exceptions. This has made it difficult for security forces and intelligence agencies to identify and trace them.
Sources also said that police may question IM members Syed Maqbool and Asad Khan again to get fresh leads about their inputs regarding blasts in Delhi. These two had first talked about strikes planned in Hyderabad and Bodh Gaya. Maqbool, who is currently in Tihar, was questioned by NIA after the Hyderabad blasts.
Maqbool, sleuths said, was a criminal who was an associate of slain criminal Azam Gauri of Andhra Pradesh who was killed in a police encounter. Maqbool was instrumental in the formation of IMMM (Indian Muslim Mohammadin Mujahidin; a terrorist organization) in 1999. He, Gauri and one Roshan Baig worked under the garb of social reformers. Gauri had also taught Maqbool to make IEDs, an officer said.
