Running cars to get costlier for Delhiites

NEW DELHI: A movie-cum-dinner plan at Connaught Place will soon cost you Rs 80-100 in parking charges alone. The New Delhi Municipal Council is set to implement its revised parking rates in August — a move that would make parking a lot dearer in Lutyens' Delhi and introduce differential parking rates in the city.

After the new rates kick in, parking in an NDMC area would cost Rs 20 in the first hour and increase by Rs 20 every subsequent hour.

"The tendering process is in the final stages. The last date to submit bids is July 23. We will soon finalize the tenders. Hopefully, the new rates will come into effect from August," said NDMC spokesperson A K Mishra,

The council had approved the new rate structure in April this year but couldn't implement it as parking contracts in NDMC areas had not expired. Now, new contracts are being issued and contractors will be asked to levy the new rates.

NDMC formulated its own rate structure after the then Lieutenant-Governor, Tejindra Khanna, approved parking rates proposed by a Delhi high court-appointed special task force. The rates approved by the LG were Rs 10 for 30 minutes, Rs 20 for an hour, Rs 50 for three hours and an increase of Rs 20 for each subsequent hour.

NDMC plans spl parking charges in Connaught Place

The civic agency also plans to introduce "special" parking charges in Connaught Place. The move is aimed at decongesting CP by encouraging people to use the multilevel parking at Baba Kharak Singh Marg. The multilevel automated parking facility developed by DLF and NDMC has being lying unutilized ever since it was inaugurated last year.

"Now that the redevelopment of CP is almost over, we want to ensure that the market is not congested," a senior NDMC official said. "We have developed parking facilities at Shivaji Stadium and Baba Kharak Singh Marg. Increase in parking rates in CP will ensure that people use the multilevel parking facilities." Sources say a final decision in this regard is yet to be taken.

BJP, the ruling party in all three corporations carved out of MCD, had turned down proposals to hike parking charges. But with NDMC increasing rates in its areas, there will be confusion over parking charges in the city.
