National School of Drama appointment surprises artistes

NEW DELHI: The suspense over who would be the new National School of Drama director ended on Thursday with the appointment of noted playwright Waman Kendre to the coveted post. It took the ministry of culture eight months to decide the next incumbent. Kendre, who at present heads Academy of Theatre Arts in Mumbai, is expected to assume his new responsibility next week.

The appointment, though, has surprised a section of artistes who had made a strong case for the appointment of filmmaker Arundhati Nag. Nag, who won the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2008, was seen as frontrunner for the post as her name was on top of the list that was sent to the ministry by a search-cum-selection panel constituted to select the NSD director. This was followed up by the presentation of a memorandum to culture minister Chandresh Kumari Katoch on June 27 by a group of theatre personalities in which 29 artistes expressed concern regarding the delay in appointment of a new director.

Maya Krishna Rao, a theatre artiste who was part of that delegation, told TOI previously that she feared the priority list might be overturned. But on Friday, Katoch reiterated that "there was no priority list", and added, "The panel sends us three names, which are then sent to DoPT, which in turn forwards the file to the PMO. They form an appointment panel of five members and then appoint one of the recommended names." The process of selection of the new director was started last August and applications for the post were invited. The panel, comprising Shyam Benegal, Girish Karnad, Satish Alekar, Govind Deshpande and Amal Allana, interviewed applicants and invited two others for the post—Arundhati Nag and Abhilash Pillai, the latter a faculty member at NSD. The panel had shortlisted three names Arundhati Nag, Waman Kendre and Abdul Latif Khatana, who heads the Theatre in Education wing of NSD.

"The ministry has set a wrong precedent by not following the list. Ensuring that the due procedure is followed is important," Rao told this correspondent on Friday. While a source said the problem was likely with the educational qualification of Nag, who does not have formal education in theatre, Katoch hinted that it was in the procedure itself. "The panel is to search for a candidate only if no one who has applied is found fit for the post," the minister said.

Karnad, who was one of the panelists, is the chairman of Sanket Trust which operates Rang Shankara in Bangalore and Nag is its managing trustee. This was seen as conflict of interest by many in the theatre circles. Nobody has questioned the appointment of Kendre, who has strong credentials. He has directed a number of plays such as Zulva, Janeman, Mohandas, Tempt Me Not, Dusara Samana and others.
