Staffer preyed on phone banking users, arrested

NEW DELHI: Watch out for fraudsters when you use your bank's phone banking facility. An employee of a leading private bank has been arrested in South district for fleecing the bank's customers of their hard-earned money.

The accused has been identified as Raj Kumar, who was employed with the bank for three years. His associate, who has been identified as Rana, is absconding, police sources said.

The accused convinced the bank's customers to provide him their password and other details when they called the bank's phone banking number to carry out transactions or enquired about the account balance. Thereafter he hacked into the account using that data and transferred funds into his account.

Interestingly, the accused withdrew small amounts of around Rs 30-40,000 from customers' accounts hoping it may go unnoticed. Police are now interrogating Raj Kumar to ascertain the number of customers he targeted during his stint with the bank, a source said.

The theft came to fore when a customer called Mrs Thadani called up the bank and enquired about the balance. She was told her account had no money. She immediately lodged a complaint with the bank which promptly initiated an internal inquiry.

It was found that someone had been withdrawing money—around Rs 4 lakh in total—from her account. Probing the accounts and transactions, the bank officials reached their own employee, Raj Kumar. Police were informed and DCP south B S Jaiswal immediately had an FIR registered on Wednesday. A team led by inspector K P Malik, station house officer, Vasant Kunj (north) initiated investigations, the source added.

He was arrested and interrogated which revealed that the incident first took place on October 27. The last transaction was made on May 11. Thadani, the source said, is a senior citizen and often called up the bank to inquire about the money in her account. In one of the conversations, the accused lured Thadani into giving him confidential details like her password, date of birth, etc.
