Woman lured on matrimonial site, duped of Rs 25k

NEW DELHI: A 22-year-old woman instantly fell for the matrimonial profile of a man who claimed to be the managing director of a leading international airline and alumnus of a high-profile central Delhi school and Oxford University. The two came close and their marriage was about to be fixed when he called her about an accident in his family and requested Rs 50,000 urgently.

The woman, a resident of west Delhi, could deposit only half the amount, and after this the man began to distance himself. His suspicious behavior and demands for money led to a scrutiny by her family which revealed that the photo he had posted on the matrimonial website was of a former Grasim Mr India who featured in several TV commercials and music videos in the late 90s.

Scrutiny of his social networking profile revealed that at least a dozen girls have accused him of fraud. The woman has so far managed to get in touch with two other victims who have given their statement to the police. The economic offences wing of the crime branch has registered a case of cheating and forgery against the man and is hunting for him. His call details and the IP addresses he used are being scanned to get his whereabouts. Police have found that he had also faked his degrees.

The story began a few weeks ago when two people claiming to be the man's brother and sister-in-law approached the woman's family for an alliance. They said they were out of the country, and kept in touch via phone and e-mail but sent copies of their passport and voter ID.

The woman's family became serious about the alliance after the man expressed his wish to marry her. A few days ago he phoned her to deposit the money in a bank account for the treatment of his brother and mother who had met with an accident outside Delhi. He said he was unable to deposit money as he was not in the country.

In the subsequent probe, the family learned that he had another profile on the same matrimonial site with a different name. He also had a profile on another website. The model whose photograph this cheat used is now a doctor in Ludhiana. He, too, has lodged a complaint with the police commissioner of Ludhiana.
