"The low day temperature was largely due to clouding and moist easterly winds blowing from the Bay of Bengal. A low pressure system that formed over north Bay of Bengal had been moving westwards and its winds were converging over Delhi and neighbouring Haryana. This caused the heavy clouding and some amount of rainfall over parts of the capital. A feeble western disturbance also exists over Jammu & Kashmir which also party contributed to Friday's weather," said an official of the Delhi regional meteorological centre.
Lodhi Road recorded the highest rainfall during the day with 2.2mm while Najafgarh recorded 2mm. Several other areas saw a light drizzle through the day.
A cloudy sky helps keep the minimum temperature slightly high and the maximum temperature low as it forms a cover between the earth and the atmosphere. In the morning it traps heats being released by the earth and leads to higher temperatures. In the afternoon, it prevents heat from penetrating and reaching the earth and hence keeps the temperatures low.
Officials said that the maximum impact of the low pressure area over Delhi is now over. By Saturday it was expected to take a northeasterly turn and bring rain over primarily Madhya Pradesh and UP . "Some amount of clouding over Delhi and NCR is still possible on Saturday but there are no chances of rain," said the official.
