The accident occurred around 1pm near Sector 126 when the bus was ferrying children to a school. It was travelling towards Sector 132 from Mayur Vihar in Delhi when the driver lost control of the bus and crashed into the central verge of the expressway. It collided with some trees and a pole before coming to a standstill, police said.
There were about two dozen children in the bus, but none of them were seriously hurt. However, a few of them received minor injuries. They were given first aid and taken to the school in another bus. The damaged bus was removed to the side of the expressway to keep traffic on the expressway moving.
The incident has once again raised safety concerns of children travelling in school buses which are allegedly blatantly flouting Supreme Court guidelines. In this case, the first aid and emergency kits were not available and the bus was also not painted the mandatory yellow.
Police have identified the bus driver as Birendra Kumar. Cops said he used to drive a truck earlier and had started driving a bus just a year ago. They are, however, yet to detain the driver.
In another road accident, a 28-year-old woman died near Sector 121 on Sunday night. According to the police, the deceased was identified as Nisha Mishra (28), a resident of Crossings Republik in Ghaziabad. She had come with her husband to see a relative who is admitted in a hospital.
