Kejriwal files nomination like an aam admi

NEW DELHI: Dressed in his trademark pant-shirt and Aam Aadmi Party cap, and with his parents by his side, Arvind Kejriwal walked into the office of the returning officer at Jamnagar House on Saturday to file his nomination from New Delhi constituency, where he will take on three-time chief minister Sheila Dikshit.

Kejriwal says his choice of seat is not based on the maths of 'winnability' but the aim to challenge Dikshit's governance on her turf. Investing the nomination process with symbolism for the common man, whom he claims to represent, Kejriwal first addressed AAP supporters gathered at his Connaught Place party office, urging them to vote against corruption as it is their last chance to steer change.

"It is now or never," he said before setting out to file his nomination. Some supporters hung garlands around his neck—his only mark of conformity with political traditions.

Kejriwal surprised everyone when he drove out in his Maruti Alto with his parents in the back seat and retired admiral Ram Das in the front passenger seat. The former navy chief flew down from Pune to be by his side. "I want to walk but will drive my car as my parents are old and cannot walk the distance," he told his supporters apologetically. They hung on to his every word, shouting slogans and waving brooms—the AAP poll symbol. His wife, Sunita Kejriwal, walked alongside the car with other supporters.

AAP supporters poured in through Ashoka Road, India Gate and then Mansingh Road. Abiding by the rules of the election commission and trying not to inconvenience commuters on Shahjahan Road, Kejriwal strode in with his parents through the back gate of the office while his 200-odd supporters stayed behind the barricading.

To a question about his son taking on a three-time CM, Kejriwal's father, G R Kejriwal, who retired from a private company in 1997, said, "We see corruption all around. The Aam Aadmi movement is nature's way to pave the way for a solution. Lord Rama had no wealth and army behind him, still he brought down Ravan's Lanka of gold. So, why isn't AAP's victory possible?"

Kejriwal's mother, Geeta Devi Kejriwal, a housewife, has been supportive of him through his journey from an income tax officer to an RTI activist and now the AAP chief contesting against Sheila Dikshit. "He will surely win. It is the 'aam admi' who is supporting him. People are fed-up with corruption and inflation. They want a solution. AAP is showing the way," she said.

On his way out, when he was asked what lay ahead, Kejriwal turned to say, "This is not my contest. This is the contest of the common man. I am not worried about the outcome: it is the common man who should be worried about making the right choice. It is a fight to make every common man a chief minister...a fight for empowerment".
