NEW DELHI: Commuters were stuck on the major arterial roads in south and east Delhi on Friday due to the Chhath Puja rush. Thousands of worshippers gathered on the Yamuna bank to make their yearly offerings, throwing traffic out of gear. Those travelling towards the south during the evening peak hours complained of jams as trucks carrying devotees made for the ghats near Okhla. Traffic in Sarita Vihar also slowed down.

Police said devotees walking on road with offerings were mainly responsible for the congestion. They added that the increase in traffic during the evening led to a greater ripple effect. The barricades put up by Delhi Metro for construction on Ring Road also led to bottlenecks.

"Though we had deployed additional personnel to manage the situation, traffic movement slowed down due to narrowing of road space," said a senior traffic official. The traffic police had issued an advisory a day before, designating alternative routes.

Commuters bound for east Delhi also reported congestion near Pushta Road and Seelampur Road in the evening due to a spillover from the main roads. Officials added that effects of the Metro work on parts of Ring Road could be felt up to DND Flyway, which had heavy traffic till reports last came in.
