While landing there, as many as four tyres of the aircraft (AI 101) got burst or got deflated that left the Boeing-777 and its passengers stranded there. While the crew member was luckily not found to be very ill by the Uzbek doctors who checked him, passengers had to spend several hours at the transit lounge of Tashkent airport.
Directorate General of Civil Aviation has ordered a probe into the landing that left four tyres out of breath or air in this case! It has sought a report from the airline into all details of the landing.
"Tyres deflate or burst mainly due to overheating caused by harsh braking. The regulator will have to check if the aircraft had a stable approach while touching down there or if it overshot the runway and then had to stop in the remaining airstrip by slamming the brakes? All these issues will need to be checked," said a source.
An Air India spokesperson said the airline had sent another aircraft, also a Boeing-777, to Tashkent for flying them to New York. "The pilot decided to divert to Tashkent after the medical emergency happened on board. Because of an overweight landing, four of the tyres got deflated and they did not burst. So there was no safety scare. Another aircraft, also a B-777, was sent from Delhi and it has landed there to take passengers to New York," the spokesperson added.
The relief aircraft also took spare parts and engineering team with it to bring the aircraft with deflated tyres back to Delhi.
