NEW DELHI: A call regarding a bomb in a crowded marketplace led to chaos near Batra Hospital in Mukherjee Nagar, north-west Delhi, on Wednesday. Police said that no bomb was found anywhere in the area and they are trying to find out who made the hoax call.

The call was received around 11.30am. An unidentified person called the Mukherjee Nagar police station to inform that there was an unidentified object that could be a bomb inside a classroom at a tuition centre for civil service aspirants. There were at least 200 students in the centre at that point of time. Chaos ensued as soon as police along with the bomb squad reached the spot.

"We could not gauge what was happening with the police cordoning off the area and bringing sniffer dogs into the classroom," said Ajay, a civil service aspirant who is a student at the tuition centre. Police had evacuated several buildings and cordoned off roads. An hour long search by the bomb squad and several specialized teams yielded no results. "The exit was too narrow. Had the threat been real, there could have been a stampede," said another student.

"We are questioning the building owner and the tuition service owner for clues about the call," N Gnana Sambandan, DCP (Northwest), said. Sources said that police are also questioning the owner of a neighbouring building who had a dispute with the building owner.
