NEW DELHI: As the last sequential date of the century —11/12/13 — arrived, young couples were in a haste to enter wedlock on this memorable date. Also, these couples didn't have to worry about getting approvals from pandits as the date is considered very auspicious.

Businessman Ankit Kohli's pandit had suggested December 24 or 11 for his wedding three months ago. "When he wrote both the dates on our kundlis, we realized that 11/12/13 was a fancy date and no one would forget it easily," he said.

Another newly-wed Vipul and Parul Chadha would have got married on December 10 had Parul not pointed that the sequence in December 11. "When my family told our relatives that the wedding is on 11-12-13, many thought that the wedding celebrations would stretch for three days. Now no one will forget our wedding date easily," said Vipul, an IT professional and a resident of Punjabi Bagh.

This date is auspicious, said pandit Ram Manohar, because Venus enters the fifth house indicating prosperity in a person's life and career. "The numbers 11, 12 and 13 add up to 9, which is a lucky number. Not only is the date auspicious for marriages, but also good to make career moves or start a business," he added.

Even the wedding planners had an extremely busy day. "With so many requests pouring in for the same day, we had to refuse many offers. People want a theme wedding these days and fairy tale is the most preferred one," said Dhyansh Raj of Wedding Planners.

With hundreds of couples rushing to tie the knot on the same day, major jams were reported in capital, especially around farmhouses and marriage halls in Chhatarpur, Narela and Grand Trunk Road. Although traffic police had issued advisory to organizers to arrange for parking space, it was hardly followed. A senior official said, vehicles that were parked improperly were towed away, and many vehicle owners were challaned for illegal parking.

Traffic snarls were reported from areas around Vasant Kunj, Rohini, Vasundhra Enclave, Mukarba Chowk, and Peeragarhi. Marriage organizers, traffic officials added, were advised to keep their processions and revelries away from the main road. Farmhouses were told to arrange for parking inside the premises and baratis were not allowed to walk on roads leading to the venue. "We usually discourage wedding planners from bringing the procession to the venue on foot," said a senior traffic official.

"It took me half an hour to go past a signal on the Mehrauli-Gurgaon road that goes via Chatarpur," said Akash, a resident of south Delhi.
