NEW DELHI: Overnight rain and a cloudy Saturday left Delhiites shivering for the second day in a row. Both maximum and minimum temperatures went up since Friday but the absence of sunlight and a light wind through the day left the city extremely cold. Dense fog is expected to make a comeback and envelop the city for the next two to three days.
The maximum temperature on Saturday went up to 15.7 degrees Celsius, five degrees below normal, while the minimum temperature was 11.4 degrees Celsius which was four degrees above normal. The Met department recorded 4.2 mm rain till 8.30am.
"Cold day conditions prevailed at many places over Punjab, Haryana and Delhi and at a few places over north and east Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh as well as at isolated places over northwest Madhya Pradesh on Friday. The lowest maximum temperature on Friday was 12.4 degrees Celsius at Bhiwani in Haryana. Delhi's maximum temperature on Friday was 12.9 degrees Celsius. The lowest minimum was 5.6 degrees Celsius in Narnaul in the plains of the country," said a Met official.
The western disturbance over north Pakistan and adjoining Jammu and Kashmir which resulted in rainfall will move in an east, northeasterly direction by Sunday due to which precipitation activity will reduce.
"There will be no significant change in minimum temperatures over northwest and adjoining central and east India till Sunday and there will then be a fall of 2 to 4 degrees Celsius. Dense to very dense fog is expected at a few places over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, north Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh during the next three days and over Bihar and sub-Himalayan West Bengal from Sunday," said a Met official.
The official added that a fresh western disturbance would affect northwest and central India from January 21 and is likely to cause rain and snow at a few places over the western Himalayan region. Rain and thundershowers are likely at isolated places over northwest and central India.
