She hoped the HC verdict would act as a balm for the protesters who took to the streets at India Gate soon after the crime and were injured in police lathicharge.
On being asked about the juvenile, who will walk out of the correction home after three years, Nirbhaya's father said, "The juvenile's case is pending before Supreme Court and I hope I get justice there, too, like I got it today." He said the convicts deserved nothing less than capital punishment because even after Nirbhaya's rape many ghastly crimes against women had occurred.
Meanwhile, advocate A P Singh, who defended Thakur and Sharma, faced strident protests outside the HC premises. A group of five-10 people raised slogans against Singh while he addressed a TV crew after the verdict. They also hurled copies of a book written by him a few months ago on the case. Another group of around 30, claiming to be members of the December 16 Kranti Sangathan, were also seen protesting outside the court. They said the juvenile should also be hanged for the crime.
The defence lawyers attacked the judgment on merit and timing. "We are sad as the judgement of the trial court was delivered when the date of Delhi asembly elections was announced and now the high court pronounced its verdict after declaration of the Lok Sabha poll dates. This shows the decision is politically motivated," Singh alleged.
