"Most colours sold in the market contain synthetic dyes which precipitate skin allergies and cause infection. Solid materials such as lead and silica which are used in these colours are abrasive," said Dr Kabir Sardana, assistant professor, department of dermatology, at Lok Nayak hospital. He said people suffering from diabetes, thyroid disorders and asthma are at higher risk of skin allergies and infections as they have dry skin.
If these colours enter the eye, one might experience mild redness and irritation. "Every Holi we see a lot of patients rushing to the hospital with significant damage to the eyes. The most common injuries include allergic conjunctivitis, chemical burns, corneal abrasion or blunt trauma to the eye," said Dr Ritika Sachdev, additional director (medical services) at Centre for Sight. She added that a person who suffers a corneal abrasion may experience severe pain and watery eyes. If one does not seek medical advice from eye specialist in time, the condition may develop into an ulcer or an infection. Eye specialists say people should take precautions, like wearing protective glasses, to ensure colours don't get into their eyes while playing Holi.
Dr K K Aggarwal, president, Heart Care Foundation of India, said heart patients should avoid consuming bhang (cannabis) as it can increase the heart rate and also cause a sudden rise in blood pressure.
According to skin specialist Dr Deepali Bhadwaj, getting a facial before Holi or immediately afterwards is not advisable as it can lead to removal of the protective layer of skin in the first case and abrasions in the latter.
