Grassroots still with AAP, middle class turning away

NEW DELHI: Aam Aadmi Party's exit from government after just 49 days, the controversies surrounding this term, Arvind Kejriwal's dharna and his law minister's midnight raid in Khirki Extension have done little to shake the faith of the hardcore AAP supporter. While many have expressed anger and disappointment at the party's decision to bail out, supporters say it still scored over rivals and remains their choice for next month's Lok Sabha elections.

"A newlywed takes more than a month to locate things in her new house. How do you expect Arvind Kejriwal to know everything about governance and set things right in his brief stint in power? He was around for only 49 days," said Gazab Singh, a shopkeeper in Sangam Vihar, south Delhi. The Kejriwal government scored in this constituency, which voted for AAP's Dinesh Mohania in the assembly elections, by putting curbs on the private tanker mafia.

In Mangolpuri, Ravi Yadav blamed Congress for the AAP government's premature fall. "The support for AAP is extremely strong in this area. The party reduced corruption significantly in government offices, and now that they are out we are being harassed again. There is also some support for BJP, but people largely favour AAP," he said. AAP candidate Rakhi Birla defeated former MLA R K Chauhan by a thumping majority in Mangolpuri.

In Pitampura, people seem disappointed with AAP's decision to quit government but support for the party remains strong. Parbat Singh, a food vendor, said, "They should not have taken support from Congress. That was their biggest mistake. But while they were in government they did an excellent job and we have no complaints. We would like to see them back in power and will also vote AAP for Lok Sabha".

People in Deoli, another AAP stronghold in south Delhi, don't doubt the party's intent but have reservations about its capability to run the country. "Arvind Kejriwal's intentions are good. His stance on corruption has forced major political parties to think twice about fielding tainted candidates. But he has his limitations. I do not think AAP can govern the country right now," said Dilbagh Singh, a villager.

Disenchantment with the party runs stronger in middle-class areas. In Gole Market, from where Kejriwal won his assembly seat, many people said they would not vote for AAP again.

"Kejriwal has cheated us. He quit as CM to seek a national role, and Delhi had to be put under President's rule. Where are the promises he made? This man could not run a state, how can we trust him with running the country ?" said Neelam Sonkar, a local, who claimed to have voted AAP in December.
