NEW DELHI: History buffs will have an eventful ride at Delhi Metro's heritage line. The Janpath Metro station, which is scheduled to become operational soon, will be dotted with colourful panels along the walking gallery. The panels, inspired by the heritage marking the neighbourhood, like Agrasen Ki Baoli in the east and Jantar Mantar towards the west, will showcase these monuments as well as the common people, denoting the 'jan' of the historic Janpath (people's path).

Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) spokesman Anuj Dayal said, "The artwork is called 'Jan-path' as a tribute to three important elements-jan or people and the two monuments, Jantar Mantar and Agrasen ki baoli. Janpath was originally referred to as the Queen's Way, and was designed as an important part of the Lutyens' layout of New Delhi.

The panel, which will be placed on the wall at the concourse level facing the walking gallery, will be 180 sq m in length. "The material to be used will be metal sheets of mild steel, stainless steel, brass, copper of different finishes, along with steel wires. The human figures will have a powder coating and a clear lacquer over the entire panel," added Dayal.

In fact, Delhi Metro plans similar exhibits-large murals, narratives and artwork of the monuments that the heritage line goes through-in all the stations from Central Secretariat to Kashmere Gate. According to DMRC officials, the murals and other artworks will be displayed in the subways along the network. "All the connecting subways will have the narratives and displays of the nearby monuments, along the walls," added the Delhi Metro official.

Other stations along the heritage line will exhibit unique, and at times, modern takes on the monuments near the stations. The Red Fort Metro station will have entry and exit points that will draw upon the neighbouring Mughal architecture. The Jama Masjid and Delhi Gate stations will similarly have distinctive murals, narratives and other artwork decorating the station premises.

Other stations on the Metro network with such embellishments include those at Barakhamba, INA, Uttam Nagar and Welcome. However, the displays there have different themes. The heritage line will be the first Metro corridor to have a consistent artistic theme of historical buildings, but with different monuments at each station, in the Delhi Metro network.
