"This is one of the oldest TBMs to be used in Delhi Metro projects. Manufactured in Germany in 1994, this TBM was used during construction of Line 2 in Phase-I and for extension of Line 2 in Phase-II. In Phase-III, it will be used on Line 7 (Mukundpur to Shiv Vihar), said Anuj Dyal, spokesperson for Delhi Metro Rail Corporation. Interestingly, the TBM was also used for tunneling work in Taiwan in 1994-96 and in Bangkok in 1996-1999. "This machine can still tunnel for 10,000hrs or 8-9km. A TBM costs about Rs 30-32 crores," added Dayal.
On Wednesday, the TBM was used to complete a 1,247m long tunnel below Ring Road. This tunnel will be part of the 59km-long corridor between North Delhi's Majlis Park (Mukundpur) and Shiv Vihar in northeast Delhi. Metro officials added that traffic flow on Ring Road was not disrupted due to tunneling.
The tunnel consists of 1,037 rings with a diameter of 5.7m. "The tunnel, into which the TBM was lowered in October, also crossed the elevated viaduct of the currently operational Dilshad Garden-Rithala corridor near Netaji Subhash Place which was a major engineering challenge," added Dayal.
