Shri Ram School - across its three main campuses in Vasant Vihar, DLF Phase III and Aravali -has over 40 special educators and counsellors. "There is one special educator for every four children who may need help," says director, Manika Sharma, "They all come with special training with background in psychology and child development." These "circles of trust" are equipped to deal with every concern of the child including bullying. have to also empower children to speak up against it," she adds.
The current lot of children is more difficult to handle and Sharma believes it's because "parenting has changed hugely." "There's a very thin line between a parent and a friend and kids will always try to push the limits," she explains, have to constantly tell parents that kids under 13 can't be on Facebook, not to create an email address for them till they are old enough and don't give them mobile phones." The school conducted a workshop on "learning to draw boundaries" two weeks ago for parents and students.
School authorities are fast realizing that they need to work with the parents first. "It's parent counselling that is required," says Suman Nath, principal, Tagore International School, East of Kailash. For the first time, she had to call a parent last year and ask her to wait in school while the child attended classes. She had to do it again with two others this year. "Year after year, aggression and intolerance are increasing in kids. We have counsellors but even our teachers keep attending workshops." Nath herself conducts workshops with parents.
Vasant Valley school has counsellors and special educators, of course, but many teachers have gone through the NCERT training for counsellors. also have a strong mentoring programme-each teacher will have 8-10 students whom she will help. The children can bring any problem-stress about marks, confusion about friendships - to the mentor," says principal Rekha Krishnan.
Delhi Public School, Mathura Road, started workshops for parents in 2013. did three workshops for parents last year. We also called in experts," says school counsellor Astha Bajaj. But she says it wasn't as well attended as it should have been.
need active participation from parents for this to work," says Bajaj, "Issues such as increasing aggression, refusal to communicate and addiction to technology can be worked through if there's a school-parent-partnership."
Meanwhile, school authorities at Modern School, Vasant Vihar, said that two of the group of the Class VI students who were filmed bullying and abusing a Class VII student last Friday, have withdrawn admission from the school. On Thursday, Modern School held an Open House for parents of kids from Class IV to XI. Over 400 attended it. A revised discipline policy based on the suggestions that came up at the meeting will soon be drafted and implemented from the next session. But before it's rolled out, it will first be presented to the parents.
