Mahabal, Ramesh make it to Congress list

NEW DELHI: Congress has finally settled for its sitting MPs in West and South Delhi, too. On Tuesday, the high command had decided to go with the current MPs in the five other seats in the capital, fuelling rumours of Mahabal Mishra and Ramesh Kumar getting replaced by fresh faces. However, it seems Congress finally preferred to play it safe to avoid dissidence while facing an anti-incumbency wave and fighting the Modi and AAP factors.

Caught in a triangular contest and still reeling under the impact of the December debacle, the central election committee had discussed several options, including fresh faces like Youth leader Rohit Chaudhary and cricketer Virender Sehwag from South Delhi. In West Delhi, actor Manoj Bajpai was considered. However, feedback from certain quarters has put Congress in a weak spot in South Delhi and predicted West Delhi as one of the toughest challenges.

Sources said finding an alternative to Mishra, who has a hold on the Poorvanchali vote bank, was not easy, though his son Vinay had lost the assembly polls from the belt.

In South Delhi, Ramesh Kumar, the sitting MP, is the brother of Sajjan Kumar and a strong Jat leader in the Outer Delhi belt. While Sajjan has been pushed to the fringes of mainstream politics due to his alleged involvement in the 1984 riots, the party had fielded Ramesh in 2009 as no one could match Sajjan's stature. Jagparvesh, Sajjan's son, however, had lost the December polls, suggesting the Congress might be losing its grip on the vote banks.
