Metro soars 23m to cross roadblock

NEW DELHI: At a height of 23m, the Delhi Metro line at Dhaula Kuan intersection may not be the highest in the network, but it's certainly the most challenging to build. A traffic-heavy intersection, flyover and the Airport Metro Express viaduct will be fully operational underneath, as Delhi Metro attempts to construct the elevated track of the Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar line of Phase III.

To construct this corridor, Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) will use a new technology, spokesman Anuj Dayal said. "Since it's a busy intersection with an operational Metro line, we will use special equipment for construction. The design has been specially made to address the unique aspect of this part of the corridor," he said. The unique aspect is the curving viaduct of line 7 (Mukundpur-Shiv Vihar), which will come in from Brar Square and curve over the Dhaula Kuan intersection towards Moti Bagh.

Adding to the difficulty is the the viaduct of Airport Metro Express, which forced Delhi Metro to cast special spans for the corridor . With a length of 37m, it's one of the longest in the Delhi Metro network. Three of these longer spans will curve over the intersection, flyover and the Airport line while trying to navigate the traffic underneath.

To prevent the traffic from stopping—either on the surface or Airport Metro—the Metro will use three long spans across this point. The distance between the pillars at the middle point is 37m—the longest in the Metro network. The sequence of the spans will be 28m-37 m-21 m. These spans will have 13 segments. Typically, a span is 31m long and consists of 9-12 segments.

To place these spans, Delhi Metro will use a special equipment : Macalloy bar. The Macalloy bar will lift the segments from the trailer to the segment launcher. As it's a delicate operation, the bar takes an hour to lift each segment one metre. The entire span will take three weeks to be lifted, as work will be carried out when the Airport Metro line is not operational.

As the segments are lifted, they will hang over the Airport Metro line at a distance of 3m from the rail head of the Airport Metro line. The height of the launcher, as it operates from the pier, will be 29 metres from the ground.

"The piers or pillars were planned so that the viaduct crosses over the running Airport Metro line at a safe distance. The distance between OHE (overhead electrification) of the Airport Metro line and the bottom of the viaduct of line 7 is 2m," said a DMRC engineer. The height of the Airport line pillar from the ground is 11.5m.
