Modi's chai gives northeast girls a miss

NEW DELHI: They were the special invitees for 'Chai par charcha with Namo' at BJP headquarters on International Women's Day. But, women from the northeast felt neglected, for BJP's prime ministerial nominee, Narendra Modi, didn't interact with them.

Despite claims of a live broadcast at 81 locations in Delhi, no arrangements were made at many places. While women from across the country posed questions on a range of issues, those from the Northeast in the audience kept waiting for their turn. "I'm disappointed as they had specially called us and he took questions from different cities. We thought we will get an opportunity in the end,'' said Maidang Basumatary, a college student.

The event — second in the series of 'Chai Par Charcha with Namo' — BJP had organized a strong gathering at the headquarters and in some areas like Shalimar Bagh and Saket. Sources said the live interaction was planned only in two areas.

Many women also struggled with the language barrier. Most Northeast women couldn't follow the thread as the entire programme was conductedin Hindi. "I couldn't get the drift as I only have a smattering of Hindi. I could grasp the meaning of many used by Modi and other people. I wish some of the questions were in English," said a college student from the North Campus.

People from about 40 areas in India asked questions, but the party didn't line up any questions from northeastern states as women from there invited for a special interaction. Though they couldn't ask questions, the women were impressed with Modi's views on financial independence, assistance through micro-finance, skill development, etc.

The live telecast throughout the city at "prominent venues" turned out to be largely untrue. TOI went to a few locations mentionedin BJP's press release. The TV screens were absent from the venues and there was no inkling of any charcha. TOI went to two venues that were listed inside North Campus (Hansraj College and at a tea vendor at Patel Chest) a venue at Majnu ka Tila, at Tis Hazari and Ramlila Maidan's Hanuman Mandir. The priest at the temple looked puzzled at the mention of the broadcast. Even BJP workers could not be seen and bystanders went about their business unmindful of the charcha.
