NDMC prepares 4-month extension for Taj Mansingh

NEW DELHI: The New Delhi Municipal Council is planning to extend the lease of Taj Mansingh hotel, which is currently run by the Indian Hotels Company (IHC), by four months. The proposal to extend the lease, which expires on March 31, will be tabled in the council's meeting on March 21. Officials say the civic agency has no option but to extend the lease as it is yet to receive a go-ahead from the Union home ministry to auction the iconic hotel property.

The home ministry had issued a showcause notice to the civic agency in July last year following inordinate delay in the auctioning process. Though the civic agency had filed its reply in August, it is still waiting for directions from the ministry on the issue. "If we don't receive any communication from the ministry till March 20, then we will extend the lease by four months,'' said Jalaj Srivastava, chairman, NDMC.

With model code of conduct in place, the ministry can't issue directions to the council in this matter, said a source. Officials, however, say there is no clarity on the issue. The home ministry after consulting additional solicitor general had directed the civic agency to auction the property, but the council members had raised objection on ministry's direction of not giving first right of refusal to IHC. In June last year, the civic agency had again sought solicitor general's opinion on the matter. "But then we got the show cause notice from the home ministry and the matter has been pending since then,'' said an official.
