The 22-year-old woman, who had been staying at a hotel, went to the hospital in southeast Delhi a week ago on feeling unwell, a source said. She sought an appointment and was directed to a general physician.
"We have registered an FIR under Section 354 (assault or criminal force on woman with the intent to outrage her modesty) of the IPC. Further investigation is on. A chargesheet will be submitted at the earliest," said a police officer.
The hospital management refused to comment, saying the victim had requested them in writing not to share the information with the media without her consent.
Police have sought CCTV footage from the hospital to ascertain the sequence of events and compare the different versions. The woman is still in India and will return after completing the paperwork. The cops have informed the US embassy about the incident.
According to the complaint, the woman went inside the room when her turn came and told the doctor about her ailment. "The doctor then asked her to lie on the stretcher and touched her inappropriately. The woman did not object initially thinking that he was doing his job. The doctor continued to misbehave and made advances," a source quoted from the complaint.
When the patient raised the alarm, the doctor pleaded with her to keep quiet. The woman informed police and gave a written complaint. The doctor denied having misbehaved and claimed to have been only doing his duty. The case, sources said, had been registered on the day of incident but the cops made the arrest after inquiring and gathering evidence against him.
