Delhi high court’s contempt notice for ‘scandalous’ charges

NEW DELHI: The Delhi high court has slapped criminal contempt of court notice on a woman who levelled scandalous allegations against judges and lawyers after she failed to get relief.

Taking a very grave view of the conduct of the woman, a division bench of Justice Kailash Gambhir and Justice Sunita Gupta demanded an explanation from her asking why she should not be jailed for contempt of court.

"After having gone through the averments made in the present petition, which are supported by the documents annexed with the petition, we are of the prima facie view that the allegations levelled by her against the various judges and lawyers are contemptuous and scandalous in nature which tends to disrepute the dignity and majesty of law," the bench observed while initiating proceedings against the woman.

HC was hearing a complaint filed by the woman's estranged husband through his lawyer Prabhjit Jauhar. The husband informed the court that there are several cases pending between the couple where she has been levelling all sorts of reckless, scandalous and contemptuous allegations against judges and lawyers.

Jauhar pointed out that the woman has not restricted her allegations just to arguments but these are found all across her pleadings, written submissions and in several complaints sent to constitutional authorities. She had sent emails repeating her allegations against judges and lawyers to the Supreme Court, National Commission for Women and the Union law minister.

In his plea, the husband further told the court that his ex-wife's allegations not only lowered the reputation of his relatives in public since she has also targeted them but also the judicial system since she has not spared anyone. The petition urged HC to step in and restore the majesty of law.

Earlier, in another litigation, based on the husband's complaint, a trial court had summoned the woman to be tried for defamation.

Her challenge to the plea in the Delhi high court was rejected after a shocked court realized that even then she had made unsubstantiated allegations against the judiciary.
